Dryin frozen mushrooms?
    #19187946 - 11/25/13 05:19 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I've read about how when you thaw out frozen mushrooms they turn to goo.  I have a bunch in my freezer that have been accumulating while I build my dehydrator.  Can I directly put the frozen guys into the dehydrator, or will it turn into a sloppy mess?  Is it better to just turn the frozen ones into some kind of smoothie?

You didn't need to freeze them... you could've put them onto a tray by a fan.

As for the rest, I have no idea, as I'd rather never have to deal with slimy goo, but AFAIK slimy goo won't dry properly in a dehydrator. A smoothie, MIGHT work, especially since smoothies tend to be slimy goo, as well.

They'll thaw out before they dehydrate. I've never frozen and thawed shrooms before but if they're anything like a strawberry once melted it's going to make a mess before the dehydrator dries it out. Maybe it would work though but that's what I think will happen.

maybe the oven dehydrating method would work... set your oven to 200 put it on a vented tray and slightly open your oven door and let sit till cracker dry... if they dont maintain their form maybe shroom chocolates is the way to go???

There are two ways to salvage what you have.  One is pretty cool, and the other is fucking awesome.  Both involve freeze-drying.

1.  Chop your mushrooms as finely as possible and spread them flat on a tray.  Put them into your freezer, uncovered, for about a week.  Ice will leave the food via sublimation over this period and leave you with a freeze-dried product.

2.  Be fucking awesome.  Get some dry ice from a welding supply or grocery store that sells it, and put your chopped-up mushrooms into a plastic container like yogurt comes in, but with holes punched in it.  Line the bottom of a cooler with dry ice, then place your container in it, and then cover the container.  Shove the whole thing into a freezer and cover it, but don't tape it shut or anything.  Check back a couple of days later--the dry ice will be gone, and most likely will all the water from your mushrooms.
