Small mutated pins/mushrooms
    #19187651 - 11/25/13 03:55 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I have these little mushrooms and pins that look like the cap is turning up on them. Does this mean they are getting too much water?

How do these look? This is my first cult.

The ones with the cap turning up should've already been harvested

I would pick those with the open caps right now. They won't gain any more weight and don't look like they are going to drop any spores so no prints from those guys. But I bet they will be delicious. I usually like to pick them like that one that is just breaking its veil. Looking great man.

Wow so many noobish responses.

Those are mutants, and they should grow more.

Lysol does not cause mutations.

OH NO NO!Lol..carry on with what your doing.. old info suggests lysol as a culprit for mutants..its been disproven over the years..i was looking for responses from the nay-sayers! its got everything to do with genetics thou

They appear to be sporeless something to think about putting on agar.

Lysol damages tissue which makes grown up mushrooms look weird when damaged as pins.

You read a lot of total nonsense on boards including this one, usually posted by noobs repeating bad information previously posted by other noobs.

The normal use of Lysol in a room as a SURFACE DISINFECTANT does not cause mutants to form.  Lysol is not an air sanitizer and it does no good whatsoever to spray it in the air other than as a deodorizer because of the perfume in it.

Lysol does contain alcohol, and alcohol causes physical damage to developing mushrooms if it comes in contact.  As anyone who grows mushrooms already knows, a dent or blemish in a mushroom does not heal or go away, but continues to grow and expand as the mushroom cells divide.  This is how that nonsense about 'lysol causes mutants' came about.  You could just as easily cause this deformity by pricking a mushroom with a needle, pinching with your finger, or pouring alcohol or gasoline, etc., on the fruits because all will cause physical damage.

I'm hoping you don't think physical damage to the parent will show up genetically in the spores.  That would be a little bit like thinking a pregnant lady who breaks her arm will deliver a baby with a broken arm.
RR

Just to clarify.

Cool... I was thinking they had to be mutants because they are only a few days old. Some of the others I've picked were pretty wild looking and broke the veil (if they even had one) very early too.

Thanks!

What makes you think they are done?

They are mutants....so the curly caps are irrelevant....

Well, they've been growing larger by the day, so I suppose I'll post pictures of the progress.

I personally only let my caps open up fully if I am taking prints is all. But I worked with a variety that put out mostly non sporulating mutants just like those ones. I suppose there is nothing wrong with letting them do whatever they want and grow for as long you would like but I personally like to harvest as close to prime as possible. Which to me is before or as soon as the veil breaks. I may be wrong about this, but I feel that is when they are best. Also if they were dropping spores they would have made a huge mess all over the FC and wherever the spores dropped on that cake would have delayed future pins. So you know, that's all I was really trying to say about that.

But these mutants have no veils.......

There is only one that I see, the one in the back.

That is why I said what I said.

I have been using Lysol air sanitizer and oust for years to "clean" the air around an area and just inoculate on a table in open air. My success rate has always been fairly high. Upper 90 percentile and I thought I owed it all to air sanitizers. This is all done in the same room where contaminations would be present from old monotubs and such. Now tohear they don't even clean the air is questionable in my opinion. Prior to using these products I just flamed the needle. Nothing more and had a success rate of about 25%. Sometimes less.
