Does a casing have to be level to fruit?
    #1918784 - 09/15/03 06:25 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I made a casing that is uneven, will it fruit normally? Will I have bigger fruits at the thicker parts? I have a uneven casing, and was wondering if I should even it out before it gets colonized. I could re-case it but some spots would be damn near a inch thick. What do you think?

Ideally you want a layer of mycelia that is not overlayed and that coveres the majority of the casing layer. This will produec even flushes, meaning you have to only harvest once per flush, instead of picking them days apart giving more opportunities for contamination to set in. I recommend letting it grow through until it's about 50% covered with mycelia, patching it, then initiating fruiting. The 2-3 days before fruiting occurs and mycelia growth stops will let the casing layer colonize completely.
