The mans workplace is no joke!
I'm lucky I've never seen somebody die on a job site, but it happens every now and then. We haven't had a shock death or arc flash death in our area for a few years now. I was just tellin OP that if you want good money without a college degree then real work probably the best way to get it. If you can't deal with being absolutely miserable certain days then it isn't for you. For me though the price tag is worth it. I've debated goin to Alaska for work cuz it pays so well and may do it at some point but I gotta take a damn lifetime supply of wax if that's the plan hahaha. Cold and lonely.

If you're not full of shit, what did you do, and why were you fired?
OP, get into trades, and move to a larger city filled with white-collar guys that make lots of money but can't do trades work (like me). You'll clean up.

Get a job in consulting, be so poor at your work that they have to assign you roles "supervising" others, use this gained 'management experience' to slide into an overpaid managers role where you're not expected to know anything technical about your job, people will both fear and hate you, and you'll do F all work cos nobody can challenge a manager.

It was IT Security consulting. They called me for what I thought would be a 6 hour job to secure the place after an admin left on bad terms.
It turned out that the security work lasted a few weeks, and when it was almost done the lead admin quit, leaving me as the only person who knew how to run all the important servers. That is how it turned into a 5 month full time job.
I quit because it was mushroom season in Mexico and I wanted to go mushroom hunting. I told them that after July I wouldn't be available anymore.

You left a 220k a year job to go mushroom hunting? You're either extremely dedicated or just plain stupid..
How easy is it for you to get a new very well paying job?

I am very dedicated.

Pretty easy. I never went to college but my resume looks good.
Usually when I go into job interviews they do not even ask about school. But when they do I tell them that I started doing IT Security consulting straight out of high school, and that impresses them more than a degree would in most cases.
I don't tend to get hired by boring, by the books types of bosses. But it does not take many interviews until I meet a boss that wants to shake things up a bit and likes my unconventional approach.

So like, what exactly is on your resume? I'm curious, it just seems like computer programming etc. are such hot jobs that there are tons of applicants/candidates.
The 220k is definitely impressive though.

It's not like I went in there asking for 220k. A mushroom hunting sysadmin friend called me and asked if I wanted a quick consulting job just this evening, and I was like ok, how much do they want to pay? He said they have a lot of money so I suggested $100 an hour. He told his boss that I quoted him $165 an hour, and his boss was fine with that.
My resume says I started doing IT Security consulting in Chicago in 1996, moved to California in 1999 to run a website that distributes hacker tools, and worked several years doing computer security and penetration testing for the federal government.
It briefly mentions most of the common security tools, unconventional problem solving, stuff like that.
Basically I wrote my resume in such a way as to imply that I was a hacker when younger and now use my skills for good. Which is the truth, though I probably would have a hard time finding a job if I came out and said that.
When bosses read my resume they are a bit scared and a bit excited about the possibilities. It's a combination that works well.
I find that in the workplace, half my bosses are scared of me and the other half think I am super awesome. Either way works out well for me - they pretty much don't give me any BS, and give me wide freedom to fix everything from the network configuration to the locks on the server room door.
Most of my work involves gaining access to computer systems. Sometimes it takes me a couple hours and sometimes a couple weeks, but I never just can't get in. When I am done I let them know how to make it more difficult to get in. Sometimes they fix the holes and other times not, but I always provide good entertainment and advice, so they keep me around.
Half my jobs I concluded that I was hired or kept around just to entertain the bosses. They love sending in a hacker to stir things up a bit. I don't mind, if they want to pay me good money to entertain them with hacking stuff, it's a cool job.
I strongly recommend that people with good computer skills go into this line of work. Seems that there is more demand than supply, and every midsize to large company needs to have a computer security guy around.

How do you get into IT work if you don't have any IT knowledge or experience? Do you do an apprenticeship and have somebody teach you or what?

I did it by breaking into a lot of computers in high school.
If you want to get started, I strongly recommend going to http://sectools.org and downloading the top security tools, installing and trying them one by one.
Once you get a handle on them you can put them on your resume, and if you have the top ten or 20 tools on your resume, that should help you break into the field quickly.
You do not need an apprenticeship, as everything you could possibly need to know you can google for.

Fucker came to my highschool saying he was a "railway engineer." He said he got paid to turn trains on and off. No college degree, 60k starting pay. Called it "The American Dream" to sit on your ass without an education and get paid big. I prefer Hunter S. Thompson's approach.

railroad jobs are sweet. I guess I look at it differently though busting my ass to make 40-50k a year. Injuries happen to lots of people in my field and we work all the time using our backs and bodies to complete a job. How crazy of me to envy someone who has a shot of not having a horrible back when he retires so he can enjoy being old for a little bit!

I don't have anything against railway jobs it's just that the cunt was walking around like he was the second coming of christ. He was arrogant and thought he was the greatest thing anybody'd ever seen and it was goddamn annoying. Maybe his job was cool but I would have liked to drive railway spikes through his joints and eyes.
