Listen to Europe 72 or really anything live from 70-72; thats the best for tripping in my experience.  I suggest just listening straight through a show too.  One of my last 25i experiences was just a friend and I sitting on my porch listening to their 1972 Radio Luxembourg recording, and it was so cool to hear the way the energy flowed as the show went on.  They do some beautiful things.

Lots of good suggestions here.  I'm a huge fan, and agree with most of them.  For me, however, I can't really stand listening to dead albums - it has to be live recordings, and not just samples of individual songs from different shows but a whole show in its entirety.  I think it's because so much of what happens in their music takes a long time to develop, and every show has its own unique character.

Personally, if you're just getting started, I would go to the album Europe '72.  From there, they cover a lot of "styles".  Workingman's Dead and American Beauty are softer, folksier albums, Live/Dead is more raw, the Arista Years albums are later, more electric, funkier, and arguably more psychedelic.  Shakedown borders on / has a disco feel (but is drop-dead, pun intended, awesome).

If you're going to jump into live dead, which is ultimately my recommendation, I think most people would say the early 70s stuff is most "accessible".  You want soundboard recordings ("SBD") if possible, and can get them via torrent if you know where to look.  Archive.org provides free, downloadable audience recordings but the quality is usually only mediocre.

Here's the deal for solo tripping: buy, rent, or steal a copy of any of the View From the Vault movies.  They're entire live shows mostly from the 80s (which are awesome but underrated years, IMO).  Pop one in about 45 minutes after your dose and you'll probably come to some sort of profound realization about how important the GD are musically and culturally both.

Oh, and there's this awesome "Grateful Dead Listening Guide" site that can recommend live shows from different eras that are good places to start, and a lot more,  it's at www.deadlistening.com.

TLDR:  Start with the album Europe '72.  For tripping, highly recommend View from the Vault series, check out www.deadlistening.com for more ideas of where to start.  It's all about live shows in their entirety.

The Dead's studio albums are good, but I agree with you 110%. Dick's Picks are great as well. DP 28 is one of my all time favorites in the DP collection.

One of my all time favorites is "Morning Dew" - the Europe '72 version.

Bird song is also great, studio version of Terrapin Station (someone send me a good live version of that)

Mmmmm grateful dead and lsd...
