Buying squat stand vs building one

Which would you do?
All the ones I find are $200+, which seems kinda high for a very minimalistic stand. If I could build one out of wood that could hold around 350 lbs i'd be able to keep it for a while. I don't have much experience working with wood, would building a sturdy squat stand be more difficult than it's worth to save a little $?

not really experienced building stuff from scratch either, but 2X4 might do the trick, id just screw the shit out of it, make triangles too and shit cause they hold loads better
might look ugly though

with something that could harm you pretty badly, just buy one unless you have a model you know will work and have experience in welding and/or carpentry

I hear where you are coming from because racks are expensive but I wouldnt build my own unless it was SOLID and I could place stoppers. You dont want to get caught at the bottom with no stoppers and god forbid, something happens and you cant dump the bar off your back, it's a scary feeling

Yeah a power rack was my first choice, but I figured this would be much easier. I haven't lifted since high school so I'm just getting back into it, wanting to work my way up a little bit to where I'll feel comfortable in a gym again.
Then I'll just get a membership. It's silly, but I'd feel very uncomfortable being a little weakling at the gym.

I don't recommend making your own out of wood, not unless you know what you're doing. Its gonna be one hell of a OH SHIT moment if the wood or nails give out and the thing collapses on you or on its own.

wood? no way
I'd make it from steel, and weld it up. If you don't have the skill or access to materials/welding machines, just buy one.
Better yet just grow a pair and go to the gym

Tbh I would trust a well built wood stand over a shitty metal one. 350lbs isn't really all that much spread over two supports. Two big fence posts set a couple feet in the ground with notches in the top.

Yeah, get a sturdy steel power rack with safety pins. Good for squats, and big benches, too. Usually they've got a way to do chins and dips as well.
A rack, a good bar and some plates are all you really need for an excellent home workout. Maybe a rope to jump, and you're set.

I have plenty of weights, an adaptive bench (can do just about anything you'd want it to do except turn into a squat rack), several types of bars
Just need to be able to squat now

Sounds kinda sketchy, OP. If that wood gives way it could be very embarrassing for you.
