Pcing rusted lids?

Ive been using some lids to separate the bags and they are started to go black and leave rust everywhere.
Should I switch them out or it doesnt matter?
Do lids always rust this way?
Or is it just these or it is coating was damaged ?

Unless the rings are badly bent they should be fine to reuse. I use rusted rings and lids. The first problem I have with rust is that it will start to rust around my self healing injection ports or GE filters which will eventually cause air to leak through and/or the port/filter to fall off. If that happens just put more silicone on or simply buy new lids. If you take care of your lids and keep them dry they should last a long time without rusting. If you scratch them they're more prone to rust too as you mentioned. Most of mine that have become rusted are because I let them sit out in the rain or something.

Ooooh, I gotcha. Well I still can't see why it should matter though, unless it's causing holes to form inthe bag for some reason you should be fine.

Get yourself some "Extend" or I use "Phospho" that turns the rust back to metal. It works better than you would think. Phospho you would have to buy over the internet but Extend you can get at an auto parts store.
I bought a gallon of Phospho 10 years ago and gave away 1/2 gallon and I still have 1 1/2 pints left.

I wanted to make sure the rust wouldn't interfere at all
Wouldnt It be cheaper and easier to just take my lids out of the PC when done and buy new ones when needed?

Do you have a tray for you PCer? If you do and you're just trying to make the bags more elevated why not put the lids down, the tray on top, and then the bags on top of the lids(edit) err.. tray ?

I let my bags touch each other and the sides of the PCer and never have had an issue.

I have read contradictory opinions on this so I just stick with what RR does in his movie for spawn bags.
Plus to me it makes sense you would get better heating of the spawn with all sides open to steam

What do conflicting opinions say on it? I've never thought much about it or read one way or the other, I just can't see it helping too much my PC is so crowded as it is. I do cook my grain bags for 2-3.5 hours though depending how loaded the PC is so I'm sure they're thoroughly heated.

I can't remember who said not to but I saw RR do it so I will as well
RR said he has PC'd 6 Lb spawn bags at 2 hours and been fine.
That space between allows for much more heat to be dispersed , The steam is very good at transferring energy , and by possibly reducing the surface by as much as maybe 30%+ by having your bags touch the walls and each other means its going to take that much longer .
I used to PC 2.25 lb spawn bags for three hours which is excessive , I currently do 2.5 with like 4lb spawn bags and Im adding an extra half hour over what was suggested

Correct. You don't need to replace them until they rust out to the point they get sharp edges, which will tear the bags. I get a few years use out of them before discarding.
For those who are using metal lids and rings for jars, simply clean them with a green scouring pad when they start to rust up. Metal lids are far superior to plastic, they just need a bit of maintenance. RR

Awesome I will add those to the list of stuff to pick up today
While you are here I wanted to make sure I didn't misquote you when I said that you had said you PC'd a bag for 2 hours , was it 6 qts or 6 lbs?
