White polypore growing from ground with brown 'cap'
    #19183902 - 11/24/13 06:18 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

This was found in mixed evergreen/oak forest at about 3500 feet today.

There is like a giant underground tuber which terminates in brown "caps" -- so to speak, though no gills.  No pores really visible either.

It had a fantastic mild taste (tasted just a tiny bit) and a pleasant smell.

The flesh is very nice and non-fibrous; rather like bolete flesh, the purest white.

Any ideas?  It was growing solitary a dozen feet from trees but seeming to grow from an underground root or buried wood.

Thanks in advance!

It looks like a Boletopsis sp.

Thanks Joie.  I kind of got there with a polypore key but then really couldn't find anything that looked like it.

There was no discernible 'edge' or end to the underside of the cap.  It was the same from the edge of the cap all the way down the stipe.  Here is a section I tore off and then tore in two for a tissue transfer.

It might be Jahnoporus hirtus, I've been finding quite a bit around the same elevation down in my neck in the woods.

Hmmm...  Well, it sure wasn't 'tough and bitter' but rather, firm and bolete-ish and rather delicious. Like pulling apart angel food cake. I'm not sure the 'stem' is right for that.  The big tuber went underground quite a bit; there were little baby fruit bodies coming off it further down.  Probably should have taken a LOT more photos!!  Thanks for commenting!

Your description makes me want to eat one!

From what I could find the few Boletopsis descriptions I could find noted bitter taste also. Pretty mysterious mushroom.

Thanks for sharing your cool mushrooms!

You mentioned tissue transfer, did you clone this?

Queen you rock beyond belief! That would amazing if you got it to fruit nicely off sawdust without fuss.

Hope someone can figure an ID on this one.

Thanks Pseudo...if I can get it to fruit, you can bet you'll be hearing about it!!   If I had the time I'd go back and try to find it again to get better photos.  It was surely the strangest mushroom I've come across.

So this has been worked out to be Bondarzewia montana? the spore pictures you posted on myco-tek seems to fit the B. montana description, but the macro features definitely are not like any Bondarzewia I've even found.

Still waiting on the mycology professor (and polypore expert) to weigh in.  It's sure an interesting mushroom.

Adding some microscopy and yeah, I need to get a better camera than trying to shoot this with the iPhone.  The first two are a thin slice of just the pore surface.  The rest are a sample that includes a tiny bit of cap and stipe.

Looks like your iphone takes fine microscope pictures.  Now you need to work on mounting the specimens so you see something useful.

Thanks Alan.  I am working on that.  I'm slowly working my way through that excellent material on movehumanityforward.org.
