And I wasn't saying that the lack of a digital search in a paper book reduces its value; I was questioning the value of pre-assembled information (in paper or digital form) without any added new information if you can easily search millions or original sources using a search engine. Also, the fact that you can steal or 'borrow' information free of charge is not what I'm talking about.
So the question still stands, but thanks for offering your observation.
What i was saying is that it doesn't matter whether the information is pre-assembled. Information is now a keystroke away, if there happens to be a structure provided, so much the better.

So what is the value of a book that only assembles information that is already available in original sources, without adding anything new?

This isn't true at all. The fact that all the information is readily available is irrelevant. It's tracking down the info, sorting it, and interpreting it that is the difficult part.
Nowadays, there's so much information, identifying the relevant stuff is more critical than ever.

I looked at the table of contents and saw probably 20+ authors. Assuming they are knowledgeable and/or experts in their respective fields, I'm sure their time is valuable.

I don't care about the cost of the book. The book is a compilation of scientific articles related to consciousness. It's like someone did a google scholar search, chose the best articles and compiled them into a book.

But is it? Or is there, as badchad suggested earlier, value in selecting, assembling, combining and indexing information? How much value exactly, compared to creating new information?

well, that is exactly how America is fucked up.
peeps like Envix don't get a chance because of those people. you can't just lump anyone who isn't having an easy time in America as being "one of those idiots". sometimes it's because of those idiots, that people have to struggle.

How did he not get a chance? Since when is it the purview of a government to provide everything for everyone, Komrade? How did that work out?

If the E-book is that expensive though all it does is create a second hand market for the book and the e-book price never goes down.

dont ILLEGALLY obtain this book through a DOWNLOAD from a torrent site, because this rips OFF the authors. its akin to a PIRATE taking goods off a merchant ship, and heading to the BAY to bury his plunder.

I'd never do something like that, it's illegal and immoral.
For those of you who already have paid $800 for a real copy, I did see an ebook version available on the pirate bay. I think it's legal to get a virtual copy if you already own the hard copy. Could be wrong on that, though. It would sure be a lot easier to read it on your laptop than to lug your 1400 page 2 volume set around .
If I've said too much, delete this post.

Last time I bought an expenisve book for fun, I figured it was too technical and now it collects dust.
"Color in hallucinations is a function of the drug and its dosage. Participants saw warm reds, oranges, and yellows on LSD, psilocybin, and mescaline; somber blues on marijuana and uninspiring blacks, whites, and shades of gray on amphetamine and sedatives."
