Flow hood shopping list
    #19183795 - 11/24/13 05:57 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Another day and another flow hood question.

I am about to start collecting materials for my "lowest cost possible" flow hood and had some questions on the components that I have been eyeing out.

So far here is what I have been looking at.

Blower:

Again I am looking at the most affordable method of getting the most CFM for my dollar, and this appears to be my best option so far. Rated for 500CFM

Shop-Vac 103-20 Mighty Mini Air Mover

Hepa filter:

This filter made by 3M and is dirt cheap and 99% against mold etc..

3M Filtrete FAPF03 Ultra Clean Air Purifier Filter

I plan on building on building the box and blower enclosure with a make shift prefilter around the venting on the blower.

Do you think this little blower will be able to blow enough to be considered effective?

Keep posting updates, I want to see what becomes of this idea. I think perhaps the main trouble you might run into with that blower is non-laminar flow, although the design of the box might make this a non-issue. If this works I might have to build one myself. I would rather stick with the glovebox than shell out 400+ dollars...

Yes I am concerned about not achieving correct air flow and I have considered shrinking the box size down and possibly filter size to 15x9 inch (same filter but smaller)

3M Filtrete FAPF02 Ultra Clean Air Purifier Filter

Unfortunately I am unable to find a detailed data sheet on the Shop-Vac 103-20 blower.  I have since emailed Shop-Vac support and requested static pressure data.

Does anyone think if I shrink the box and filter size this little blower would be sufficient?

I got a 99.99% 24" x 48" Hepa filter for $100 locally. They come from clean rooms, computer facilities or if you are lucky, a nuclear grade facility or something spiffy like that.

The blower doesnt create laminar flow, the filter does. In order to make this happen, the filter has to have some resistance to it.

That filter you posted isn't going to produce the necessary resistance to create the laminar flow. It doesn't even publish the resistance, and I cant imagine its much at only .75 inches thick.

Filter size, resistance, and blower CFM (at a given resistance) all come into play when planning for laminar flow.

Thanks for the extra info wildernessjunkie, if you were going to buy a blower and a filter what would you choose? I live in Canada and am finding it hard to find anything local.

I got my filter from ebay. Found a real good deal on it. Good deals are out there if you look and wait for them. The lumber I got from the local Home Depot, and the blower I got from the local HVAC shop.

The way I understand it, the closer you can get to 1.0 WP resistance, the better.

I'd like to help you with the math, but honestly...I don'd quite understand it myself. I got lots of help from some really cool people.

I do know that you should get a suitable filter first though. The resistance will be labeled, and the the size will be apparent. From there, you can choose your blower appropriately. Looking back on it all, Im really glad I didn't buy a blower until I had my filter in hand.

A flow hood is just one of those things that you shouldn't skimp on. Mine has been worth every penny, and has paid for itself (if not just in savings). Do the research, and take the hit financially. You wont regret it.

I would use a better blower , That one is gonna be a pain to seal ,and use an actual hepa filter , Thats a great pre filter

Im starting to think skimping on the components is a bad idea too.  Do you know what the make and model of the HEPA Filter you purchased was?

 Yes I agree its a little flimsy, and does not have resistance data labeled.  I will keep on hunting.

Go on ebay for your Hepa filter ,you can get a 24x24x12 for 75-150 which is a a great work space

Then get a blower from grainger for 200-300 depending on hepa size

Until you can get a nice one just use a SAB IMO

I still use one , Im just waiting for some more money and my room mate to move out before I buy all the parts and put it together , Ive got all the stuff I need bookmarked pretty much

I live in Canada and the extra duties and customs/brokerage fees are way too much when ordering from the states.  I think I have found a suitable blower from Amazon.ca.

iPower GLFANXINLINE8 High CFM Inline Ducting Fan

However I am still looking for a better high capacity HEPA filter.  If anyone is living in Canada and reading this, where do you buy your HEPA filters?

Thank for the info WJ!  Are you happy with how it turned out?

So I ordered the above iPower GLFANXINLINE8 High CFM Inline Ducting Fan (rated at 770 CFM). and I am looking at buying the 24x18 HEPA from fungi.com.  Do you think that blower is overkill for the 24x18 filter?  Should I be moving up to a 24x24 filter?

I have seen links to the CFM and Resistance calculations, however I just cannot grasp the math involved.  Any assistance in matching equipment up would be much appreciated!

I'm no good with the math myself.

I'm not sure if that fan is going to work or not. CFM at a given resistance/pressure is important. That ad doesn't list any performance criteria. Further, since you don't know the resistance of the filter you won't be able to match the blower to it.

You need to slow down and do some More research, or you'll be spending money for parts that won't accomplish what you want.

I'm sure that someone better than me at the math will come along at some point.

I use a valueline 780 inline and it produces way more than enough I have to still block part of the intake.

I just received a quote back from fungi.com for the 24x18 HEPA filter and with taxes and shipping was quoted $225 (not including customs/brokerage fees). Do you think this filter is would be a good match for the blower ordered above? Unfortunately there is no data sheet at fungi.com for the filter.  Does anybody have any additional insight into fungi.com HEPA filters?

You should always order your filter first

Your filter will come with a graph which you need to truly determine air flow needs

Most filters are not the same which is why each comes with this graph , you just need to this graph to make sure your blower is sufficient and dont have to return it or buy a new one

Especially since this site does not have the any specs

If you get one with too much flow you will have to do this which will strain the motor

Go to low and you wont be able to meet required air speed

I have also purchased a Se Electronic Stepless Speed Controller which should allow me to control flow and by increasing/decreasing the amount of prefilter screening I should be able to fine tune the blower output quite well.

Has anybody used this method to calibrate blower/filter output?

OK.  So let me point out to OP that there are lots of places that you can cut corners in this hobby/job/life mission but a laminar flow hood ain't one of them.  It is THE most essencial piece of equipment we use.  Any time I see a post that contains the words "cheap" and "flow hood" I cringe.  Save your money up and buy quality components.  When you think about it, a flow hood is very very simple.  A blower, a box and a filter. I see that you purchased an FP filter.  wise choice.  Now pair it with an appropriate Dayton squirrel cage blower and you will have the best possible hood you can build.  It will be money well spent and you will not regret it.  anything less ends up costing more in the long run in frustration and contamination.  Friendly Advice...
