Apparent cure for alcoholism ---> Baclofen
    #19183634 - 11/24/13 05:20 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

So my doc prescribed me this med a few months back, I never really took it because I dislike taking new medication very VERY much.

But I did my research and finally decided to take a pill today.

Apparently it works extremely well to treat alcoholism due to the fact that baclofen is a GABA-B inhibitor. The good news is (apparently) high doses of baclofen can safely be mixed with high doses of alcohol. Minimal intereaction. So can can progressively make the switch from alcohol to baclofen only and finally nothing at all.

It has been increasingly given to patient struggling with alcoholism and the results have been very positive.

If one of you has tried it, give me some feedback.

If you never heard anything about it, here's your chance to make your research

Baclofen.

so, it gets you buzzed? or it inhibits the action of Alcohol, so if you drink, you don't get as buzzed or...?

No.

At high doses you get kinda woozy, somewhat like alcohol (so I have read). But what it does is it prevents the cravings.

It is a med primarly used for multiple sclerosis patient. It's a muscle relaxer. But it has interesting side effect of reducing alcohol consumption

That's what it's supposed to do.

Does it really work though? I'll find out in the following weeks I guess.

My doctor was really optimistic when he gave me the precription. I waited 6 months before taking it. I figured fuck it, let's do this shit

How much are you prescribed?

There is a regime for using it in addiction, i forget what it is called. Basically you start at 10mg a day and slowly work your way up until you hit the "switch." That is the dosage you stay at and for most people it is pretty high... like in the 200mg/day range.

Also it supposedly curbs cravings for all drugs, not just alcohol.

I got some 10s right now. 120 pills, 6 repeats so I got 720 doses. The bottle says to take one every 6 hours.

I'll try to get a hold of my doc in the next few weeks to see if I should up the dosage. I just don't want to get to the point where that pill gets me high. I really hate when meds start giving buzzes.

ur gonna need more than that. There's a lot of info in the mywayout forums. Basically, most people need 200mg+ a day for it to work for addiction, and 99% of doctors won't go over 80mg a day, so most people over there order it online.

I messed around with baclofen a couple times, it gagged me when I thought about alcohol. Made everything taste a little weird.

Definitely not a "cure" anymore than benzos or phenibut are IMO, Baclofen being a phenibut derivative.

It does potentiate the hell out of alcohol, and will reduce your tolerance over time. I've had better results with Neurontin/gabapentin than baclofen. It's another one that "cures" all addictions, from meth to booze to dope.

Hi folks - I am new to this forum.  I received a google news post today regarding baclofen and alcoholism. I would like to add my two cents worth of information regarding baclofen and alcoholism. First let me just say that I just a former alcoholic who has been taking baclofen for 9 months. I offer no medical advice nor do I have anything to gain (financially -or otherwise) from talking about baclofen.

I am 50+/- yrs old and drank Firewater since I was 14 years old. Lost willful control over alcohol consumption at about age 40.  Always drank more than necessary to achieve a buzz or mellow state of mind.  I became a full fledged-final stage alcoholic. If you so happen to be one yourself (or even on the road to one), you already know what I am talking about.  That vicious cycle from hell where you tell yourself "today, I am not going to drink" -and then, well, you know the rest of story.

Baclofen was my miracle.  I had tried everything else in the book to stop drinking (to stop craving) to no avail.  Then I watched a Diane Sawyer-Dr. Ameisen video online.  I was off to the races.  I found an outpatient rehab in south Georgia that agreed to work with and baclofen. Now in closing, please consider baclofen for alcoholism if you have a problem. It does not work for every one (does work for about 80%), and it has some initial -hell to deal with- side effects.  But once thru the side effects and free of alcohol, you will possibly wonder if you ever were truly an alcoholic. For me, baclofen causes me to be indifferent to alcohol -I can now take it or leave.  99% of the time, I leave it.  Alcohol just does not appeal to me any more.  Yes, I sometimes still want to change the way that feel or perceive a situation, but I just don't choose to take alcohol -it does not work the same way that it use to work.

I hope this information might help someone who is struggling.  There is an answer if you are willing to give it a try.  Check out the forum mywayout or baclofenforalcoholism.

Till then...Peace

Good info - I have recently made a post on "mywayout" regarding Gabapentin.  I did not receive much positive feedback -except for a couple.  However, as we know, some people are slow to change.  There is some recent research that is extremely positive about gabapentin and even says the side effects are much less drastic than those from baclofen.  So, now that I have read your comment, I have to believe you know what you are talking about and I look forward to researching Neurotin.

Hey there

One thing I'll add is that with both baclofen and gabapentin, you should be tapering (slowly decreasing your dose) rather than going cold turkey, due to how these drugs work. I'll also add that I don't believe gabapentin to be a "cure" either, but I have had very good and satisfying results in the year I've been taking it. It took a good 3-4 months before I really started noticing improvement and a decline in edginess, but then it started. Much more than baclofen ever did in the ~8 months I took it

Good luck :sun:

I was on Naltrexone for a month back in August. Seemed to help some, but I'm doing will power these days.(12 days dry). I haven't heard of Baclofen. Good luck quitting that poison.... :faded: . . . :peace:

Hi
@Pcplease -what dosage baclofen did you go up to? I am at 180 to 200mg/day. Seems to be plenty and my level of anxiety is markedly less.  I can function without any cravings and feel great most of the time (except for the somnolence).  And yes, I have heard there is hell to pay if you do not taper down slowly.  What are the pros/cons of gabapentin vs baclofen.  Does gabapentin address the anxiety as good as baclofen?  Thanks for helping.

@vinsue -I declined the offer of naltrexone at my last treatment center.  I was so convinced that baclofen was a real answer that I did not want to skew my baclofen experience with nal.  (Although from what I now read, taking the two together, initially, may be a better solution).  And willpower, alcohol decided that I know longer deserved such an asset -at least as far as alcohol is concerned.
