Synecdoche, New York

Synecdoche, New York.
Starring: Philip Seymour Hoffman.

I just finished this movie.  I highly recommend it to anyone who is not overtly suicidal... or young;  If you are less than 30 years old, you probably don't have enough life experience to appreciate this film;  wait a few years.

If you have a short attention span, do not watch this film.  You won't understand it.  It is a movie which requires real concentration and involvement to appreciate.

You very likely won't understand the message until the last 15 minutes or so of the movie, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be paying attention and trying to figure it out.  If you zone out or give up, the ending will mean nothing to you and you will have wasted 2 hours.

For fucks sake do NOT watch it high.

As far as 'depressing' cry-fest movies, there are some others which you may be familiar with... 'What Dreams May Come', "The Fountain", "Requiem For a Dream", "Trainspotting"... none of these even comes close to 'Syneccdoche, New York'.  They all end on a generally positive note (Except for Requiem), and have moments of relief from the existentialism they are trying to convey.  This film does not.

As far as weird and convoluted films, well there is yet another pantheon:  Naked Lunch, Pi, Eraserhead, 2001, etc... again, none of these comes close to competing with 'Synecdoche, New York'.

It is the most complicated, convoluted, depressing film I have ever seen... and I loved it.

Highly recommended.

One of my favorites.  Very trippy but not in an immediately obvious way.

I've seen it. Very, very long but worth it. Not really that depressing though, in my opinion, but if it is depressing it's in that very personal, existential and relatable way that tragic films usually don't go for. It was neurotically funny more often than it was sad, I think.

This movie was pretty cool.

Charlie Kaufmann is the man.

I did watch it high, and it was awesome.
