Rye questions

I'm new to grain and was wondering if this would cut it. http://www.shilohfarms.com/products/Rye-Grain%2C-Organic.html
I know the price is a rip off, but these are the only rye berries I could find at my local health food store. I would greatly appreciate any info on where to find a cheaper rye grain, other than online. Feed place by me only had rye seed.
Also, when using 1qt grain jars in pc, would a dry bottom layer of vermiculite be acceptable?
Thanks in advance.

No dry layer of verm at the bottom. You can make rye grass seed work.
UTSE.

Would you recommend adding any vermiculite to grain?

GOD DAMN that is expensive... but yea itll work.
So heres something i think i should share. Ive been using rye grain for about a year, it works quite well. However i found myself paying way too much than i'd like for the amount of jars i wanted to do. I was browsing wallmart and went to the WBS section and found a 40lb bag of penningtons classic for under 20 bucks. this is approximately 4x the ammount you would get for 20$ at a whole foods. Much more economical than the rye seed. just throwing that out there.

I get 500g rye for £1.09 (Pounds sterling). Why not order online? There is nothing dodgy about ordering grains...
Also I don't understand the vermiculite question - why do you want to put dry verm in a grain jar

looks like you live in WI or IL if that's your local store. Try outpost they have rye for 90 cents a pound. Whole foods is a bit more expensive. There's always WBS too. Shit even a woodmans probably has it.

Prob gonna look into getting some wbs. I know I can buy that cheap.
And I was thinking of using a layer of verm just to prevent excess moisture, but Ill just keep it to grain and gypsum. Thanks for the help.

I tested some RGS and it was WWWAAAYYY too expensive. I watched RR's video and while informative, it didn't scratch the surface of advantages/disadvantages, except for mentioning adding diluted coffee for sclerotia forming species. I understand the advantages of more inoculation points, but other than that, I'm using rye grain from now on.
This is what this hobby is for, experimentation. I won't use expensive RGS when cover crop rye is a hella cheaper and does what I want it to.
I know of a guy who won't use anything but milo for his grains but that's above my price range as well. Rye rules.
