Matcha source?

I am looking to buy a small (kg) bulk quantity of Matcha green tea powder. There is endless options on the web with a wide variety of price points ...
Reading abit about how it is harvested, and processed leads me to believe that there are "consumer/culinary" varieties and "ceremony" varieties with a massive gap in price between the two.
Really - what is the difference?
If anyone has any experience buying bulk matcha powder, and/or could supply a recommended online source, that would be great.
Discuss!

Given the lengthy and labor-intensive production process, I'd say that only at the higher price points there's a chance of actually buying the genuine product.
What kind of prices are you getting?

Ok, I did some quick searching here, and it seems that 1kg of decent matcha will set you back >$500. Anything below that point would probably be really inferior.

That sounds on par with what I was searching for.
I did find a lb for $50ish on Amazon and it was rated highly (although only 5 ratings.)
I am not set on a KG, a lb would suffice - no special plans for it, just tea and smoothies.

It does seem VERY easy to misrepresent.

I wonder if that lb @ $50 is just regular ground green tea (possibly sweetened too). It doesn't sound like the real deal at all. In fact, it simply can't be. Still, some people may enjoy it.

That's what i was thinking.
I wonder specifically what the difference is between cooking grade and ceremonial.

better matcha is more lightly steamed before being ground which preserves more of the aroma and flavor, there are also numerous different processes for making matcha depending on the type and price. All tea comes from the same plant. It's how it's handled and processed that dictates the price.

Doesn't it also have to do with the selection of leaves? I imagine that is perhaps the primary differentiator.
