The Blues accordin to Lightnin Hopkins

Getting a good buzz going to watch this, including the 'American Folk Blues Festival' I don't think there is a finer encapsulation of the genre on film. Lightnin Hopkins is an interesting mix of Country and Electric influences at a time when Country Blues was already long dead, there were performers of the genre around during the 1960s but few were in there prime. Patton and Robert Johnson was dead, Son House and Skip James were old, everyone was buying Howlin Wolf, Elmore James and Muddy Waters or else rock and roll.

The American Blues festival features a few of these artists on video. An interesting thing to me about the blues scene in the early 1960s is the primarily European audience, how that happened is beyond me, but it never caught on with the white American public. In the black ghettos and small southern towns the preachers were sometimes set against bluesman and proclaimed it the devils music, that didn't help its popularity but it still got around and some musicians even made a decent living performing (while other notable figures literally starved).
All this happened before and during the Jazz scene picking up, so you could technically see Louis Armstrong one night and Robert Johnson the next. Very strange. Anyways it never caught on with the general American public, early Rock and Roll was in some ways a hijacking of the electric blues formula but that's about as close as it spread outside of the black community. Eventually with many of the musicians having given up music and retiring to labor, the old records picked up popularity in a less overtly racist Europe. From there it picked up speed out here thanks to bands like the Rolling Stones.

Was all that coherent?

even Jazz was considered the devils music too... it still got pretty popular in the US, before Rock and Roll. wonder why? maybe people just thought some solo guy singing about pain and sadness wasn't real music, so they proclaimed some evil trickery.

I think a lot of it came from white anti-black bigotry, paying off preachers and the like. Make blacks turn against their own culture to keep them unempowered
