Rapidly cooling substrate
    #19178762 - 11/23/13 12:26 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

After 60 minutes at 140-160, is it okay to use the fridge or something to cool the substrate faster? It's just coir/verm with no gypsum. But even if it was hpoo, is it harmful to RAPIDLY cool the substrate like this?  What are the benefits of gradually cooling at room temp as opposed to the fridge? The reason I ask is because I have family coming over tonight to stay for a few days and my substrate won't be done pasteurizing until 430-500

Let it cool on its own its at this point where the benificiac microbes are spreading

Cool thanks. I was thinking about making a separate thread asking exactly when those microbes make their way back through the substrate because if it's not while it's still in the bag, then doing something like THIS would be just as effective as pasteurizing everything. But now I know

I've also noticed that after my 60 minutes pasteurizing, the sub takes another hour and 20 minutes-ish to cool below 140. That's almost 2 and a half hours with the core between 140-160. Is that bad?
