Why would a casing help in this scenario? Care to elaborate?

Unless you live in Florida a casing will be beneficial IMO, a casing will be very helpful in providing a good micro-climate at the surface of the sub to encourage pin development.
Because it colonized so fast, he might be considering holding off casing until later, IME late casing seems to work better when you case with coir, otherwise the casing just gets fully colonized.

pasty, i think u should add to this thread or make a new one b/c this is really working for me. i wish more would try. i just did late casing with sterile coir/verm to grain/sub of sterile coir/verm. at least i considered it late. pins are in upper right of pic, but the rest were knots. this already had about 1/4" of coir/verm sprinkled on top at spawning. don't usually do that after evenly mixing, but i thought i was not going to case at time of spawning.

just to clarify for ppl, b/c i really do think this is a beneficial and easy way to increase pin sets, can u maybe post a pic of ur subs at the point where/when u case it? i mean, at what point do u consider it late? the picture clarification would help b/c many ppl will fruit/case RIGHT at 100%, so a "late casing" pic would help many, including me

How long would sterilized coir/verm last in unmodified mason jars? Seems like a great way to do a hercules amount and take as needed as spawn becomes available.
I really like the idea. Pasteurizing in jars is long and requires much more attention. No to mention, you need to do it right before you want to spawn to bulk.
Also, leftovers that I sometimes use 2-3 days later give me a sketchy feeling, as though I'm taking a risk on moisture content and possibly contaminations.

i used a pasteurized sub 5 days old with coffee in a 66 qt tub, and now am only getting side pins. no funny smell tho, but i used coffee, and didn't spawn right away
I'm guessing u can keep the sterilized stuff for a long time if u just keep it in those jars

I had sterilized CVG in jars for 11 days, untouched and spawned some WBS to it, and it colonized/is colonizing fine....this is 8 days today.

Funny Cronier you should change name of post to " I Think You Should Sterilize your Sub" that would really draw some attention and flames Im sure. I love the simplicity in this.

exactly what pasty said, i also like the fact it's easier to see the surface drying up, i mean i can see it fine w/o but with a casing i can see it from across the room

I recommend against it. As RR has mentioned a few times, coir doesn't germinate mold spores, be it sterile or pasteurized or bucket'd. And I don't see any reasons that sterilizing is better than pasteurization in this instance
And just saying "you should sterilize your sub" is going to get a lot of questions about things other than coir.
Plus, who wants to draw flames? Go hang out on 4chan if you're looking for that shit, sololas

Fh, if coir won't germinate spores why then do you pasteurize it in your examples instead of using the easier bucket tek?

I hate mixing up a bucket full of boiling hot coir, even with thick gloves the heat penetrates quickly. It's also a habit at this point.
Not only that, I have a precedent to set and proper pasteurization is good form. I don't want to field a million questions about bucketing poo and whatnot
