It comes from an advanced IQ test for the advanced geniuses of advanced super intellect of the gifted called Raven's Progressive Matrices.

I will post the right answer when I have recieved a sufficient number of answers. Good luck
First of all, what is the answer and most importantly, how the fuck did you figure it out??????

I took a real IQ test once, administered by an education psychologist while looking for learning disabilities. It didn't have anything like this question on there. I dont think this question is very meaningful or relevant.

Answer is C. The shapes are progressively rotating clockwise in a predictable pattern. C is the next logical step in the pattern.

It's either A or C, because you never see 3 shapes linked together, process of elimination. I could go on, but too lazy.

The only pattern I could see is that the right box of shapes rotates 90 degrees counter clock wise to make the left box on the row below.
i.e.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 ?
box 3 would rotate 90 CCW to make box 4, and 6 rotate 90 CCW to make 7

Can you explain this more. I don't really understand the "progressive rotation" you are seeing.

Fuck it, here's the answer and how I figured it out.
The answer is A
If you take the middle row of each box, the left and right symbol of each box matches the box adjacent to it and the last box connect to the first one.

It was between A and C after all. Only ever are the hearts linked. I guessed A, counting the amount of squares where there were 2 diamonds linked together (5) and evenly spaced (like 3 or something), so A was most likely. That's not really an answer though, I know.

Agreed.
Ok
Take the middle row of the first box and look at the symbol to the right (club). Look at the box next to it (middle row on the left), its also a club. Now take the the symbol on the right of the second box mid row, its a diamond. Which matches the diamond in the box next to it.
Do that until the end. Now you'll see that the last box before the answer has a diamond in the mid row on the right, which mean the mid row on the left of the answer has to be a diamond. With that logic, that means the mid row on the right of the the box needs to match the mid row left of the first box. Which is also a diamond.
Only A and F have 2 diamonds on the left and right of the middle row. F is obviously wrong, so that leaves A
All the other symbols in all of the boxes are decoys. Useless info to confuse you
EDIT: FORGET THIS EXPLAINATION COMPLETELY. IT MAKES NO SENSE WHATSOEVER AND I AM NOW CLUELESS WHY IT WOULD BE 'A'

There is no right answer. You can make up any justification you like for why any answer is correct. Without a framework the solution open ended.

Is it possible that the answer is A due to the top row of the boxes on the bottom row and not the middle boxes? My logic was that the inside squares kind of matched and my ocd wanted the last square to be a club like the first square.

That's the thing.
I know that is is A. But I have no explaination as to why it is A.
That's why I posted it here. I want our collective brains to figure out why its A and not another answer.
See it a a huge math equation to solve and simply flipping to the answer section and being told that its A. Having the answer does not explain the reason why it is the answer.

That pattern works for the first four and then completely falls apart from what I can tell. And it only applies to the last column.

to mathematically solve it, you need to comsider the matrice a 3x3 matrice of polymomials, with the coefficients of hearts, diamonds, clubs, etc. then you solve for the roots of each polynomial to find the solution to any single matrice. After you solve the roots of all the matrices shown, you can see the pattern clearly that will lead to the answer for number 9.
This is called a ring of polynomial functions in a vector field. All the polynomials have to have solutions.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_of_polynomial_functions
Now, if you got the right answer, you are either a super-genius if you didn't go through the math, or you guessed right.
If you have time to solve this knock yourself out.

Look at the pattern of the shapes and how they touch their neighbors. Some have three shapes touching no identical neighbor, some have two, and some have one. E.g., for the first box there's a diamond touching no other diamond = 1. In the second box all three clubs aren't touching other clubs = 3. In the third box you have a heart and a diamond not touching another like it = 2
132 is the first row now do the same for the next rows and you find out you need a box with only 1 shape not touching another like it. There are three ways to accomplish this diamonds hearts and clubs and two of them are already being used do the answer is A

Although I am sure it's part of the solution. Condition 1 type of thing. here are more things to decipher.
So were looking for an answer that equals 1 with shapes not touching each other

If it is random then you couldn't find an answer for the empty matrice in the sequence.
But it isn't random, if the probelm is solvable then it is a ring of polynomial functions in a vector field. The only caveat is that the system of equations has to have roots that satisfy all the matrices. If it doesn't, then it couldn't be solved.

Holy shit guys I'm up to something:
The last column of the 2nd box in the line = The middle column of the 3rd line if you assume that Dimonds turn into clubs, clubs turn into hearts and hearts turns to diamonds.
Diamonds --> Clubs
Clubs -----> Hearts
Hearts ----> Diamonds
Column 3 of box 2 = column 2 of box 3, if you apply the switch above

SOLVED IT!!!!
Apply the same switch.
3rd column of the first square turns into the 2nd column of the 2nd square, which turns into the 1st column of the 3rd square.
So its always a 3 turn into the 2 turns into the 3, if you make the shift I mentioned earlier
Jesus fuck... that wasn't easy

I know my guesses where wrong, I just said what I would have GUESSED. But to solve it do as I said--write out the systems of equations with the given coefficients, solve for the roots, and then analyze the sequence.
Each matrice will have three equations, with the general form
y(n)=a(x^2)+b(x)+c where y(1) = the first matrix, and y(n-1)=the matrice before the one you want to solve.
so for example, if the very first matrice is represented by diamonds == a, hearts=b, and clubs = c, then the set of equations is:
y(1)=[c(x^2)+c(x)+a a(x^2)+b(x)+c a)x^2)+b(x)+b]
solve the solution of the system of equations for each matrice y(1) to y(8) and you will be able to figure out y(9)....trust me.

I will post the right answer when I have recieved a sufficient number of answers. Good luck
First of all, what is the answer and most importantly, how the fuck did you figure it out??????
Immediately I noticed that the top left and the top right are mirrored and reversed (upside-down), but then I noticed that the second row were not the same patterning style as the top row (left and right). So I have no idea anymore.
Edit: Woah never mind, it's actually not mirrored and reversed, when I took a second look at it, a few of the symbols were out of place.
I just read your answer Patlal and I have no idea what you are talking about. I looked at the first block or all three rows and didn't see them matching.

That's because you don't think like an engineer. If you write the sets of equations down to solve the matrices, then the next time you go to solve it you have the computer program based on the equations that solves it in a couple of seconds so you don't have to go through 'the complicated mind fuck' again.
But seriously, I beat you to Raven's matrices about a year ago in this thread....

These are hardly IQ tests. An IQ test should not be based on a learned skill. This is easy to do if you've learned how to solve this type of problem.
Nvm. I thought they were all 3x3 matrices. Most of these are not problems you can solve with a formula... Well, a standard one.

No. Actually this is a fair IQ test, its only based on pattern recognition. Anyone from any language or culture could look and see the patterns. However the mathematical model IS 3x3 matrices, so the normal way to solve it is to solve the matrices using linear algebra.
Now, there are a total of 9 3x3 matrices nested in one big 3x3 matrice. After solving for the roots of the 8 given nested matrices, you would solve the solve the unknown matrice by placing the roots (solutions) of each matrice at that point and then solving for the solutions of those equations to get the unknown.
That is, the bigger 3x3 matrice is a 3x3 matrice with POLYNOMIAL coefficients.
This kind of problem is solved all the time in computer science for cryptography, and in electrical engineering, with computer programs, for network analysis and passive network synthesis.
Geniuses, however, look and recognize the patterns quickly without thinking by the math. Could say mathematically they solve the problem graphically, by recognizing the topographical space. Unfortunately, I'm not a genius.

Aaarrrrrgggg...! I took that entire 60 question IQ test on that site and after I finished they ask for 20 euros to view it. Fuck, that was a waste of time. All of them were easy as fuck though, except for like the last 3.
Anyway North Korea? Wtf? But yeah, I lived in one of the top 7 countries for a year when I was a kid, and you'll get beat (by the teacher) if you're goofing off.

I did too. But if you read the fine print underneath, they will send you your test results within 24 hours to your email. The 20 euros thing was simply if you wanted to view the test IMMEDIATELY.
Always read the fine print especially for any legal contract, folks!

Turns out I was wrong and right simultaneously.
I was wrong about the answer, but right in that I got the opportunity to learn something from it.
If I was right, I get hailed as a genius. Wrong, and I get the pleasure of exploring the logic behind the correct answer. Either way, I win. This stuff is what I live for. Thanks, OP.

I have never played Sudoku, but in this puzzle each line does not have different numbers of suits. In line 1, there's 3 clubs, 3 heart, and 3 diamonds. In line 2 and 3 there's also three of each.

ya i was too tired to try to work anything out last night, i was just surfing comments on a different site
ok
the first row of three boxes work
row 4H 3C 2D row 4C 3D 2H row 4D 3H 2C
the second row dosnt
row 3H 3C 3D row 5H 3C 1D row 5D 3C 1H
since the second row is off the columns wont fit that rule either
column 4D 3H 2C column 4H 4C 1D column 4D 3C 2H
column 4H 3D 2C column 4H 3C 2D column 4C 4D 1H
furthermore the first three boxes (first row)
have 2:1 ration in each column with the remaining column being one of each 1:1:1
HOLY SHIT FORGET EVERYTHING BUT THE LAST SENTENCE im on to something
each row and each column in each 3X3 have 2 2:1 and one 1:1:1
which make the only possible ansers down to A,B, or D
oh wait the middle one dosnt fit the 2:1 , 1:1:1 thing MY FINAL ANSWER

After staring at it for a minute, my answer is either A or C.
I think A. I can't explain why though.

It just feels like it might be right.
I don't know, I'm really tired.

The answer is A
why not b or d?
Because B and D don't follow the patterns. A and C do, but A is the only one with a lone heart not touching other hearts. C has a lone club and a lone club was already used.

i believe c to be the middle piece of a different puzzle, because it dosnt follow the two 2:1 and one 1:1:1 ratio of all the other outside pieces

There's no math involved in the solution. There's a clear, easy pattern that can be solved without even a pen and paper. I solved it on the first page and explained how on the second page.

the middle box is the only one that dost go
♣♣♦ ♦♥♣ ♦♥♥
2 rows have a 2:1 ratio 1 row has a 1:1:1 ratio
2 column has a 2:1 ratio 1 column has a 1:1:1 ratio
so C has to be a middle box

The last column of the 2nd box in the line = The middle column of the 3rd line if you assume that Dimonds turn into clubs, clubs turn into hearts and hearts turns to diamonds.
Diamonds --> Clubs
Clubs -----> Hearts
Hearts ----> Diamonds
Column 3 of box 2 = column 2 of box 3, if you apply the switch above
Quote:
Patlal said: SOLVED IT!!!!
Apply the same switch.
3rd column of the first square turns into the 2nd column of the 2nd square, which turns into the 1st column of the 3rd square.
So its always a 3 turn into the 2 turns into the 3, if you make the shift I mentioned earlier
Jesus fuck... that wasn't easy

the ratios are a pattern
a pattern of every 3x3 box having
2 rows have a 2:1 suit ratio 1 row has a 1:1:1 suit ratio
2 column has a 2:1 suit ratio 1 column has a 1:1:1 suit ratio
except that damn middle box
