What exactly is bruising?

So I have read multiple posts hearing anxious ppl asking whether they have contam or bruising. I recently dunked and rolled and am 99% sure i have small patches of light bruising on my cakes.
What i want to know is the exact reason why mycelium bruises. Is it due to rough handling, the shock of cold water, or just reaction to oxygen after birthing?
Only answer if you actually know and have a legitimate source.

bruising comes from rough handling or from your cake being too dry.

It is oxidation of psilocin, caused by it's exposure to air, due to the cell walls that contained it being damaged or destroyed. Cells can be damaged by rough handling, extreme temperatures or severe dehydration.

It is oxidation of psilocin phenolic compounds, caused by it's exposure to air, due to the cell walls that contained it being damaged or destroyed. Cells can be damaged by rough handling, extreme temperatures or severe dehydration.

Do you have a source? Not that I don't believe you, but I have never been able to find an official article stating any definite reason.

Right. That's partly correct. Psilocin contains a phenolic OH group, so it could be called a phenolic compound. And most authorities on the subject are agreed that psilocin is the one causing the bruising, since it becomes blue-black in laboratory conditions when exposed to oxygen. Even in the thread you posted is shown that he slightly misunderstood a wikipedia article.
