Those who talk don't know
    #19177270 - 11/23/13 12:59 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

and those who know don't speak.

There is a Buddhist parable i'm having trouble remembering, perhaps one of you can help me find it again.

It's the story of a man who goes to see a master, and asks the master to point him in the direction of some enlightened beings. Long story short dude travels a lot and finds two guys, one who rambles on incessantly and one whose says nothing at all. He returns and asks the master which of the two men were enlightened. or something like that.

In my opinion, i know that i don't know so it's okay to talk about. Just part of the game no harm no fowl.

the idea is what who knows is free, to know something at least he must be present
and when you are free true present perspectives and opinions, that freedom is what matter to you and even to all as it is the truth, so you wont point stupid knowledge of all reality as object thing which is never free so not true
reality of individuals is reality of each individual only

we are principally as basically as first always only free

That, of course, from the Tao Te Ching.

The irony (not lost on Philosophical Daoists) is that Lao Tzu says that and then goes on, in his little book, to speak hundreds and hundreds of words.

I think the message is about the need for humility.

It's okay to speak, but don't assume you have a monopoly on the truth.

dao ke dao fe change dao, dude

To me that first line in the Tao Te Ching, is a kind of disclaimer, akin to saying, this is the best way i can put it at this moment, but the truth is i am not able to perfectly describe the truth.

imo this is a kind of satori like teaching, as in, don't get caught up on my words, look at the message.

a finger pointing to the moon, don't get caught up on the finger.

unless of course you find the finger enjoyable or the words enjoyable, neither is necessarily the right or wrong way to go about it, just one way of many, which is one

*edit

also i believe humility is a huge part of this game, being open and humble enough to be corrected, and have that correction corrected, the distancing from dogmaticism.

Wonderfully put.  I couldn't agree more.

A fine and very delicate point.  Few "grok" that shit, you know.

The point was made a week ago or so, in another thread.  There, the allusion was to the iconic image of Jesus pointing to his Sacred Heart.

Same idea.

"Don't focus on my words / my Tao Te Ching / my pointing finger / my death and resurrection / the ancient mythology / etc. etc. etc.

Focus, instead, on the jewel being pointed to."

This probably isn't what you are referring to but thought id post it anyhow

"One day a man visited the Buddha's monastery, seeking some knowledge of the teachings. The first monk he came upon was deep in silent meditation and did not answer when the man spoke to him. The visitor became enraged and stomped away. The next day he came back and happened upon a learned, erudite disciple, who responded to his question about the teachings with a lengthy, intricate discourse. Once again the man became furious and went off. He came back again the next day and chanced upon the Buddha's disciple Ananda."

"Now, Ananda had heard what had happened on the first day, when the monk said nothing at all, and what had happened on the second day, when the monk replied at great length, so he was very careful to deliver only a medium-length disource-something, but no something so very long. Amazingly, the visitor once more became enraged. He said to Ananda, "How dare you treat such weighty matters so sketchily?" and for the final time he ran away."

"When the monks approached the Buddha and described what had happened on each of these three days, the Buddha wisely replied: "There is always blame in this world. If you say too much, some people will blame you. If you say a little bit some people will blame you. If you say nothing at all, some people will blame you."
