Where do YOU think the limit is in current computer technology?
    #19177159 - 11/23/13 12:33 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I mean this from a user/application point of view?

Do you think the weak link in the chain currently is:

1: Memory
2: Operating System
3: Processor Power
4: Application Software
5: Storage

Personally, I would rank them like this (in terms of weakness)

1: Application software:  Garbage in, garbage out.  The computer will only respond to what is put into it.  So if an application, (software) is run and it is buggy, the computer won't perform as well.  Usually crashes, BOD's, etc, were attributed to driver software/etc, at least in XP not the OS as much as drivers (still true)

2: Operating System:  This is rather like general software, but it controls things like how an application will be allowed to use resources on the system, i.e. memory management, etc.  The big bugaboo up through Windows XP (Yes, I know there are other operating systems) was memory management.  Windows 7 is a very stable and fast operating system, and most of the complaints now about windows are old bias that dies hard.

In the company I work in, I can't even think of a single programmer who uses any operating system anymore except windows.  Whereas a few years ago, lots of programmers still used Linux.

I'm not familiar with Mac systems so fans of those feel free to comment on it.

3: I would chose the storage here.  SSD's are great, and if you aren't using them extensively you are missing out on efficiency BUT:  they still are expensive to get large amounts of storage.

4: Processor Power:  You'd be hard put to find anything that stresses a high end intel micro.  The only weakness is probably heat if you really run them hard.

5:  Memory.  Put 32gb of memory in your computer and see if you can use it all up.  Can't be done.  Memory management and memory itself is so efficient now that memory is the strong point now. (If you are using windows 7)

Opinions?

Definitely not storage as that is pretty damn good right now...

Definitely a limit with the operating system. I'm not sure of the extent as I'm really not knowledgeble on the exact working of things.

I've heard macs don't have many problems with viruses but I've never used them.

I think processors are pretty damn good right now as well.

I would think application software and operating system would be the biggest limitations right now.

I have 16gb of memory and I honestly never have issues doing anything. I can run 4 monitors with my graphics card... I have a quad core i7 that works perfectly well.

So yeah.. application software and operating system IMO.

Read the 5 things that are named in the middle of the paragraph.. use that against the question asked and you have your tl;dr.

Ah, i forgot graphics cards.  They are probably between storage and processor.

I agree with the top two and don't know enough about hardware to comment on the rest.

IMO even as hardware advances, I think software design is stagnating. As efficient as the newer Winduhs are, they still run on basically the same concept they debuted with in the eighties, and so does most mainstream software. The bells and whistles (like animated desktops) are spiffy as hell, no doubt, but I'm waiting to have my mind blown.

Hmm I've never checked out animated desktops.. I'm going to look into that.

Not to mention that operating systems are getting worse..

They will get better I'm sure but hopefully its before the decent OC's end up obsolete and people are forced to change over to something shitty.

Winows is very stable now and works well.  What microsoft needs to do is quit hiding shit and changing the way it works every time they put out a new windows version.  Then you got to learn it all over again. :awedisgust:

They fucked up the audio starting at Vista, they moved the audio endpoint driver so you can't stream out nearly as easily as you could before.  Fucking assholes.

Windows 7 was a UI upgrade from Vista.  It's no wonder why it wasn't so fucked up on launch.

They've done this before too.. Maybe they fool people into buying the new windows and then are forced to change back to the old...and get all new computers to be started with the new one, only for people to pay for the old version as well.

I'm giving them too much credit I'm sure.

I'm pretty sure there is a whole hell of a lot more upgraded than that.
