Why not buy a mature rooted specimen and grow it out? When you feel comfortable with it you could cut, buy more adults, or grow from seed. Growing these guys really boils down to due diligence. Research the shit out of everything cactus - soil, best pots, lighting needs, watering, black spots on tips, rot, insects damage, humidity, dormancy.

Get a cutting, get some seeds.
Pot them up and watch them grow. While they're growing read the theoretical stuff. Mistakes will happen but afterwards you'll learn how to treat your cacti properly^^
Depending on your location you should wait till the days get longer, or invest in some growing material like lightning etc.

Get a few cutting from a Shroomery sponsor or by using the Google. Do a bunch of research on the best way to grow them.
a quick rundown Make sure the cuttings are well calloused before planting them Plant in a cactus soil, preferably in an unglazed clay (terra cotta) pot Keep on the very dry side until roots have begun to form, and then gradually increase watering.
Some things will vary based on where you live and whether you need to overwinter indoors. Give a shout if you have more specific questions.

How much light do they need? Would indirect light through a window suffice?

If you have to overwinter them indoors, it's best to keep them in the coolest non freezing part of your house. Lighting isn't very important because the idea is to induce dormancy by keeping temps cool and witholding water. If I had to overwinter indoors (or when I used to have to) I would just take your cuttings and set them in clay pots with no soil sitting upright in a sunny window. They will push roots over the winter and then you can pot them in the spring into a cactus soil. There's more than one way to skin a cat though.
