Blending BRF substrate?
    #19175837 - 11/22/13 06:01 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Any advantages/disadvantages over simply combining in a bowl? I'm thinking it would lead to a finer substrate with a more even nutrient distribution and have a higher oxygen content, this plausible? Or detrimental in any way? Have an expendable blender on hand

It would pack way too much, which is not what you want. A fluffy substrate will colonize much faster. However, feel free to give it a go & post your results.

I think he's talking about preparing his entire substrate mix in a blender, rather than mixing ingredients together in a bowl.

I'm with the people who think it'll get packed more.  The vermiculite is a large part of what keeps it airy, and when you blend it into smaller pieces you'll get a denser substrate.  But yeah, give it a try and let us know either way!

Yeah, it getting packed down to much is what I thought would be the biggest issue. But if the mix is blended so fine the mycelium could spread easily simply because it's not trying to work through dense clumps that would otherwise slow it down, couldn't it colonize faster?

You will end up with smaller parts closer together.  Less air (space) for the myc to colonize through.  Your jars might stall.
I try and fill my jars as loosely as possible.
Let us know how it goes.

:peace:

Plus, mycelium tends to cover the surface area of every substrate particle, and when you chop something into two pieces you increase the surface area.  You'll slow down growth significantly with smaller particles.
