Other than cancer, what can lung spots on an x-ray be? Any idea what COPD looks like on an x-ray?
Details, patient is 85 year old female, has COPD but has not been a tobacco smoker ever, was around second hand smoke a lot, but not for the last 35 -40 or so years.

They could possibly be what's known as Granulomas, small spots of inflammation in the lung and are harmless.

I'd looked up Granulomas and its a relief that they exist. I was seriously worried about my grandma, she raised me as a mother. I think Granuloma is probably right because of her history of pneumonia and lung infection, and I can't imagine what risk factor would be for lung cancer other than second hand smoke 40 years ago. What do you know about treatment for Granulomas, I read they are often biopsied? How invasive is that and when do they choose to do that?
Thanks.

IME (I had a couple show up in my last chest X-Ray) the doc did nothing, telling me they usually go away on their own so intervention is unnecessary. Of course, I'm nowhere near 85 yet, so I don't know what they'll do for your grandmaw. I wouldn't worry too terribly much about it. Just cherish her and love her.

My grandmother informed me that she received a call from her doctors office and was informed by the secretary that the radiologist wasn't worried by the spots in the lungs and that there were similar spots in her x-rays going back several years to when she was diagnosed with COPD. I urged her call them back and find out exactly what it is as I told her its probably harmless granulomas and would like confirmation of our ideas.
Toiletduk you are a great great man. You saved a woman a lot of stress and mental duress waiting to hear back about the news of this.

Well, usually they're harmless, I should have said then.
