So these are the first 3 sterile mushrooms i have ever cultivated.
So to set it up, MS Creepers from non-vendor. PF Cake, tall half pint jar. ~2 weeks after birth
The Fruits from one cake. 3 believed sterile. Middle right believed to not be sterile.
Now the gill shots, starting from the left then going right.

Whatcha think??

They have been cut, placed gills down on a piece of aluminum, within a plastic container that has a lid. I'll snap a pic tomorrow around this time for the big reveal.

I didn't know it was possible to have "sterile" fruits. I was once told that any FC or tub isn't a 100% sterile enviroment. Though I've never had any trouble taking prints and making clean MS syringes.
Are the actually "sterile" somehow??

Do we know they are really sterile if they don't deposit VISIBLE amounts of spores? Is there a way to see if they really don't have ANY or if they just have like... two.

Yep! A swab to agar will show how many CFUs you've got.

They do appear spore-free, but I wonder if they are just late spore producers. I've seen more than a few strains that will not produce many spores at all until the cap has flattened out quite a bit.
Cool looking mushrooms though

Thanks man. The cap that opened first was the only one that looks like it will drop a print. I left it for a day in hopes it would grow some more. I have noticed that I'm not getting nasty spore messes on my cakes and perlite. I am trying to pick not long after the veil rips. Usually within 12 hours. I got them on aluminum foil now. I guess since this is a genetic gamble, could they be albino spores if they are clear/white spore deposits?
Stay tuned mushes and muses, for later tonight is the grand revealing of the spore deposits!

Once I fix this truck I'm looking!

The results are in!
3 Sterile caps, one sporulator.
The caps in preceding pictures were as, from the left in the four of them layed out, starting in the top left corner going clockwise.

5 minute dry period in open air. still no spores.

The print i got. its actually like a centimeter wide.

Frank, i think you may be right again. The cap that did sporulate broke its veil, hours before the other 3. Said cap also was a lot flatter than the others. Is this now considered a genetic trait?

I think you are on to something blo
Is it sheer chance that the non-spore caps were round and dome-like while the spore-producer had a flat cap? Hmmm.
Interesting indeed! ~ LC

Yeah, Frank said he's seen quite a few cube strains to not produce until the cap flattened. Exotics have an almost flat cap, sometimes umbo.

It happens from time to time.
And it can be a few fruitbodies that don't produce spores while the rest of them do produce spores from a canopy in a monotub when working from multi-spore obviously.
Depends on the strain as well.
Don't forget to clone the cap.
You tend to notice when you are printing and you are like wtf? Where is my print then you look at the gills closely and are like lol. No spores on that one. Time to clone from cap tissue.

Clone from the cap? This is new to me... Always thought we cloned from the base of the stem?
