Woodlover or contam?
    #19175919 - 11/22/13 06:17 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I decided to try my hand at woodlovers, and I got a big question mark with this one. I've seen contams all the colors of the rainbow but I have never seen this. This is supposed to be an Azure, from a TS. I'm kinda skeptical. Its almost like cobweb but does not act like it, grows slow like a cubensis but very tomentose. After a few days, things turn black, but only the surface of the agar. The rest of the agar is spotless, and the black stays 1/4" back from the edge. I'm a total noob with the outdoor stuff, but this does not look quite right, but I dont know, I've never seen this with cubies. Any opinions? Sorry about the crappy photos, I had to turn the flash off, they got washed out. Right after the photo, I transfered away the light area at 3 o'clock, to see if the black will follow. Bets are it will, but every transfer the black goes away a little bit more. Do I continue with this or can someone identify this as a contam for sure? I need another 'pretty sure' opinion before I contact the TS. Thanks.

Peace,
FT

Well, anything but white is not good as you know. Molds get colored after they sporulate (like trich: its white first and after it sporulates it gets green and it spreads everywhere).
If its turning black its not azur i think, i would not open that jar before sterilization either. But i havent had much experience with contams so i suggest u wait for other replies.
