first harvest, drying/desiccant questions...
    #19175913 - 11/22/13 06:16 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

couple quick questions on drying and desiccants.  thought I didn't have a fan, so I was going to ask if simply drying 100% with desiccants was possible (silica gel to be specific), but then I realized that my cool mist humidifier, sans filter and any sort of water/the water reservoir, is- as far as I can tell- simply a fan.  I know fan drying with a humidifier sounds pretty damn ridiculous but w/o the water and the filter I imagine it would work...?

but more importantly, where can I buy more silica gel?  I don't have much and despite much searching/asking at the local hardware store (lowes), I couldn't find any and was directed to the silicone/caulking/adhesive multiple times...  and also, does the "screen" you place your mushrooms on above the desiccant need to be an actual screen?  I have heard of people placing their mushrooms on a piece of cardboard or paper towel to elevate them above the desiccant, would this work?

thanks shroomery

I use the fan from mine for my pelliculosa, no prob as long as there's air movement, once done I chuck them in the oven for a few minutes with the door open

sounds good.  and I'm probably trying to avoid the oven method...  I'm sure the potency you lose is minimal but still

Heat won't cause potency loss u only need it at about 150 anyway

gonna go ahead and bump this in the interest of getting more opinions on the oven drying method...  my oven only goes down to 170 for some reason, so it seems a bit sketchy, although maybe its okay with the door open?  was about to just go buy a dehydrator cause its just too damn convenient, but I figured I would try and hear some more experiences with the oven method first...

yeah it's fine with the door open and only takes a few minutes if you fan dried first
