New to Shroomery, first pins growing fast!
    #19175398 - 11/22/13 03:58 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I wanna start by saying, thanks to the community here! Without the forums I never would have gotten this far! This is my first time ever growing anything. When I took shrooms 10 yrs ago we always found a cow pasture somewhere lol.
I inoculated 12- 1/2 pint brf jars on 10/25/13. Somehow i managed to get 0 contams. First 3 jars went into the sgfc 4 days ago after a 12-20hr dunk. I was waaay too impatient to leave them for the full 24hrs lol. The rest followed & the last 3 jars went in today. I skipped the roll after the dunk bc it seemed like a waste of time. I fan & mist often, since I stay home during the day I check on them several times a day. Is it possible to over fan? I don't mist every time but fan probably every other hour. My digital hygrometer reads constant 99% humidity, yes I will be going to get an analog tomorrow lol. Everything seems good so far. Its so exciting to see all my hard work grow! I'm hoping I will have enough ready to harvest for renfest next weekend! What is the average time from pinning to harvest? I couldn't really find an answer to that when I searched. Thanks again!

To answer your last question, your harvest updates should be coming very soon... It goes fast after pinning....

They look great man

from what i understand, the extra layer of verm added by the 'roll' keeps the moisture up and helps with humidity.  I'm only a noob myself, but i would roll'em after the first flush.  Even roll half of them so you can see the diff for yourself.

Good luck

OP, I can't speak for shroomery in general but this is definitely my favorite kind of post.  "Everything is great, have some pictures!"  Fucking solid.

Were it my SGFC, I'd skip the hygrometer.  All it does it tell you if your cakes and perlite are visibly moist enough that they glisten, which your eyes and fingers can do much more reliably than any hygrometer.  There are a lot of other things you could spend that money on in this hobby that you'll find much more helpful and useful.

There's no maximum amount of acceptable fanning as long as it's humid enough in your fruiting chamber (and especially at the surface of the cakes) to produce pinning.  If you fan too much you might have to mist more often (until your cakes glisten) and you might have to hose your perlite and cakes down every couple of days with lukewarm water from the shower, but neither of those is a particularly big deal.

Not trying to ride OP too hard here, but she can already see the difference for herself.  While she has some excellent pins, all of them are coming from the areas covered in vermiculite.  It's especially telling since most cakes fruit preferentially from the sides, in my experience.

Good point! There are some tiny pins coming off the sides of the cakes I put in today, but most are coming from the verm. Is it too late to roll the cakes with no pins?
I only did this to see if I could pull it off, but I think I may be hooked now. Thanks for the advice guys, I think I'm gonna mist more often.

nice grow lol

but you should, imho, fan your cakes right after you mist them.
atleast 3 or so times a day.
the main reason we fan is usually to evaporate water on the cake itself,
and cause it to pin.

good luck and cant wait to see the fruits!

Bah, patience is the key my friend. Dunking and Rolling in my opinion is one of the most important details to growing cakes. First they take nearly a month to colonize. After all that time the cake itself drys out quite a bit, enough to see shrinkage in the jar usually. Not to mention after the first flush and so forth. general rule of thumb is that mushrooms are 90% water weight when harvested.. That water comes from somewhere ya dig? Secondly the Rolling technique helps create a lil micro climate that will help for pinning and bigger yields in the long run. Always DUNK and ROLL when you birth AND after EACH flush. my first 16 cakes produced me around a 4-5oz dry over the grow cycle, got 3-4 flushes per cake.

I wouldn't roll now, just keep up with your misting, mist till its covered in moisture/fan/repeat when the moisture isn't visible, no need to mess with them now you may just delay things. As long s you can see moisture on the cakes you have 100% humidity on the surface of them where it matters, once you have pins you can sit them in a saucer of water overnite to replenish some moisture while they fruit, after your first flush is done just cut back on the misting for a few days and let the cake dry up a little and take a well earned rest and it can lead to better future flushes(after a few days just dunk and proceed like normal).don't forget to take prints and on a final note congrats on a job well done

I've been misting more, seems like too much bc of all the bruising. Pulled one cake that only produced one mushroom with no other signs of pinning. Dunked & rolled (had an issue getting verm to stick, need to get finer verm i guess) some bumps coming up now. I'm worried now bc there have been some greenish spots appearing on a couple of cakes, but its also on the cake that is pinning the most. If you zoom in on the pic its the 3rd row from the top, middle cake & the one above it, towards the bottom of the cake. Hoping it is just bruising & not a contam. It doesn't appear to be getting any larger. Seems to just be a really dry spot.
Thanks for the advice guys, it is appreciated!

Those greenish spots are metabolites--nothing to worry about.  And unless you're misting with a fire hose or pressure washer, I promise you aren't hurting your cakes.  Everything looks nice and damp and perfect for fungi.

Arnt you supposed to dunk and dip in dry verm before putting into fruiting conditions?
I believe they did that on RR's Videos.
