Wet Verm Problemo

When I purchased my bag of vermiculite it had been sitting outside and had collected some water. I decided to use less water in my mixture due to the water content it had already had from sitting in the rain. Is it a problem if I use this moist verm as a top layer filter or does it need to completely dry out first?

i would say dry it out first just to be safe. just lay the verm on a baking sheet and bake at 250F for 30-40 mins.

its supposed to be dry, it serves as a contaminate barrier that way

Wow... Hun... It's the contams I'm worried about... I would sterilize/evap in the oven before using... Not sure what the tek is, don't take my word for it. But what I do know is your wet verm probably is far from sterile, and that would scare me... Maybe sterilize in PC first than dry in oven... I have no clue, don't risk it IMO.
Anyone here might be able to tell you how to dry it, but most definitly, don't risk it until you have more info. Wouldn't want you to lose your projects for a 10$ bag of verm...

wet or dry, vermiculite does not come sterile.
For verm to work as an effective contam barrier, it needs to be dry.
I would spread it out on a cookie sheet or in a pan and stick it in the oven on 250 until it's dry.
Dry vermiculite will give you dry verm for your contam barrier as well as help you get the recipe right.
Putting it in the oven is just for drying and is not intended to sterilize. You will sterilize it once it's in your jars.
