what's the best cheese?
    #19173329 - 11/22/13 01:18 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I'm getting tired of the usual "sliced cheese". I went to Walmart and saw lots of different types of cheeses. I saw a Gouda cheese which reminded me of someone from my childhood who had mentioned it to me then. Is Gouda supposed to be an excellent cheese both in taste and nutrition? This same person is said to have "grown" as in physically. Was it the Gouda cheese he had been eating, huh? I have never tried it. The cheeses I have tried are the most common popular cheese (American, Swiss, Feta, Parmesan, Cheddar, etc.).

Try some mozzarella + tomato slices + olive oil + a little basil + a pinch of salt. delicious

or some mozzarella and some prosciutto. super delicious

Also try some of the goat cheeses. Gives a new texture and there are tons of them.

Always make sure you have some salty crackers on hand to clear your pallet before switching kinds of cheese, or in case you dont like one

Wow, there's so many types of cheese out there - there really is no 'best cheese'.
Gouda is just a designation for cheese made in the Dutch style, so it's a firm, solid cow's milk cheese with now or only a few small air pockets which may be ripened up to a few months depending on the kind you get. Good Gouda is good cheese, bad Gouda is bad cheese. There's no saying if 'Gouda' is a good cheese - it really depends on the actual cheese in question.

Also, cheese isn't particularly healthy. It's usually pretty high in saturated fats, to begin with, and often quite salty too. But in moderation, it's not bad for you, unless you're lactose intolerant of course.

One of my favourite all time cheese is made by Beemster, its called Vlaskaas. Melts in your mouth but has those lactic acid crystals that form in aged cheese. Amazing flavour, as well as a nice texture contrast many cheese lack.

I have had a really nice pecorino with black truffle though, probably my second favourite.

I love cheese, I'm the guy who orders the cheese platter for dessert over a sweet dessert.

Not so good for the breath though.

There are many great cheeses out there which can not be compared to each other. I do not know which are available where you live, I can only speak for Europe and here it is quite easy to get them. There are great blue mold cheeses like Roquefort available, as already stated above Mozzarella is also a great cheese to enjoy. There are also Mozzarellas which are made from buffalo milk and which I prefer but they are a little more expensive and harder to come by.

A good cheese is also Halloumi. It is from Greece/Cyprus and has some mint inside. It can be fried or is good for a barbecue and the big plus is that it squeaks when chewed.

Beemster is a geographic denomination that has been adopted by a particular company as its brand name, in this case Cono. The Beemster area is located near Purmerend and is a patch of reclaimed land (used to be a lake) and the soil was too soggy to allow for agriculture. Hence, cattle was kept on it, which resulted in a good availability of milk, which gave rise to the region as a prominent source of cheese. In terms of cheesemaking, Beemster and Gouda cheeses are comparable, with the differences between individual cheeses being much bigger than the differences between all cheeses from these regions.

Haloumi is made throughout the Mediterranean region. It may or may not have mint mixed in with it; I've come across haloumi with mint, but they also sell mintless haloumi here. The haloumi I bought on Cyprus two weeks ago did have tiny mint fragments in them, which didn't contribute to the flavor at all.
Haloumi is a great cheese for grilling; it keeps its form. Highly recommended to combine with grilled vegetables

for god's sake stop shopping at walmart for food. You want good cheese? look up an actual cheese shop near you and ask someone who works there. Or go to a nicer grocery store and pick up some humboldt fog from cypress grove farm, CA. You won't regret it.

I finally just tried some Gouda cheese. It taste like cheddar cheese, except this one is smoked so it had that smoked taste. Not bad. I think cream cheese is also good. I was never into it til now. It's pretty much spreadable cheese, right? I also bought some Gruyere cheese which I haven't tried yet. I want to try all kinds of cheese.
