Proportional Representation

What do you guys think of this system of electing legislators? Do you think it could work in the US?
I think he we implemented a form of this in our elections here in the US we might be able to get other 3rd party groups some more power and say in our politics instead of the 2 headed monster. We could avoid some polarization amongst the people as well because now everyone views are represented equally in government (in theory).
Also do you think runoff voting for president is a good idea?
We obviously have some sort of representational issue if we have this many people upset with the way things are ran. That and peoples ignorance at the polls I guess.

Are you saying that the current system doesn't have proportional representation? The house of representatives is an example of proportional representation in the federal system, and many states have proportional representation in their legislatures.
What exactly are you talking about?

Yeah I guess I wasn't to clear on that.
Say instead of a winner take all election for legislative branches we award seats proportionally to different parties according to the poll results. So instead of only 54% of the 50% of people that voted, (which means usually only around 25% vote for whoever wins) we could have, 30% democrats, 30% republicans, 15% libertarians, 10% green party etc.... in congress or whatever.
Do you think that could help promote more people to vote if they felt like they were really being represented according to their beliefs?
I guess this would throw a curve ball in our representative district system.

It would mean that you don't have a representative that is looking out for your particular district. It would also strengthen the party system because You'd really be only voting for a party that would choose which representatives to send, as opposed to now...at least now you know who you are and aren't voting for.

That is a really good point. Do you thing there could be a way to get around the issue of party politics in such a system? Is their any Europeans that could shed some light on the issue because I looked into it and a few EU countries use this way apparently.
