freezer --> incubator
    #19173650 - 11/22/13 05:01 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

i recently made an incubator from a freezer, using the cord from an electric blanket and a normal house thermostat. it works nicely.
i decided to just put the thermostat inside and only put colonising jars and bags in tubs or bags in it (if that makes sense). so the humidity won;t get high in the incubator (electricity...), and if jars contaminate, it won;t spread, only within the bag or tub the jars or substratebags are in.

I no longer incubate and just keep things at room temp...  But I give you props for rigging this thing together and hope it works well for you.

Using the heat blanket is an idea I wouldn't have thought of, good MacGyver work there :thumbup:

i got the idea from someone else (from a dutch mushroomforum), just tweeked it a bit.

it's mainly for during the winter, and because i promised my girl that the mushroom hobby wouldn't take over the livingroom, so i can't incubate stuff there....

Good idea.
You can buy the resistance wire without having to buy a blanket (ebay) You can also buy for about $10 from Sunteck a digital T.Stat with a remote sensor so you could mount it externally rather than use up the internal space.

This is a brilliant idea. Bookmarked. Don't usually incubate but I do keep my house pretty cool in winter so this might be helpful growing tropical species. Thanks for sharing
