drying
    #1910329 - 09/12/03 03:55 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

i am getting ready to cut my first flush, off of six cakes. is the best way to dry them just to place them in front of a fan on high for a few days. Or should i put them in a dehydrator that i have until they are fully dried and crack easily. any help appreciated.

#1 dont cut them, pluck them.
#2 If you have a dehydrater I would go that route.
#3 If you don't, use a combo fan/roadsalt (dessicatent)
There are pics of that I posted somewhere

The dehydrator is not recomended unless you can turn off the heating element. Fanning them is the norm.

I hate to rag on people but there is at least one drying question already here and it is only like five or six posts down. Try searching a little before you post questions of any sort. You may think that your question most likely hasn't been asked, but most likely any question you have has already been asked.

use dessicant dryer. Keep them one inch above and cover. You can buy it at Lowe's

If your local Lowe's carries it. It seems that there just aren't any stores where I live that carry desiccant at all.

Look for ICE MELT, it's material that is thrown on patches of ice. It's the same damn thing for 1/2 the price.

damp rid and such is usually in the paint department, fyi. It works well for me. 3 days is usually enough for mine to get completely sapped.

how high is the humidity in your area right now? if the humidity is low, like in winter in the midwest, a fan is just fine. if you're dealing with high humidity, like summer in MN, then i'd go with the dehydrator. btw- use the top rack of your dehydrator- this helps to reduce overheating. some say the dehydrator severley reduces potency, but i strongly disagree.

this works great for me!

any empty clean sealable container ($0.89)

(plus) +

damprid refill ($2.89)

(plus) +

any paper towel ($0.99)

(plus) +

mushrooms, fan dried for 1 to 2 days (priceless)

(equals) =

your very own drying chamber. (~$5.00)

notes: just make sure the paper towel is betwwen the shrooms. never let the damprid touch the shrooms. very simple, very easy, very cheap, very effective! +

Whoa!....... you don`t want calcium chloride on your shrooms when that towel gets wet...... you`ll get some hellacious stomach cramps I hear. Better raise them up off that chemical with a screen and use and a towel on top of that if you like. I prefer fan drying first.... gets most of the water out of the fruit.. then finish off with dessicant that makes for cracker dry shrooms that will keep for a long time

Try hardware stores...... ACE True Value, OSH look in the paint department.... it`s used to dry damp areas to prep for painting..... damp rid, damp-b-gone... lots of variations on the name. it`s calcium chloride crystals

hellfreak,i got my damprid at walmart, in the same isle as washing detergent and cleaning products.

numba9, if you re-read my post, it specifies shrooms dried already dried for one to two days!

and there are actually two paper towels in my chamber, one to sepreate, the other to sepreate again, folded several time to seperate some more. but good advice you give non-the-less!

Dessicant info here: http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23690

It says you can use silica gel, often found in craft stores like Michael's.

Also, you can order a third type here: http://www.colonialscientific.com/Dessicators.htm
