Seeking opinions on status of mycelium, 1st grow BRF Jars
    #19172056 - 11/21/13 07:38 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hello all,

I have been researching here at Shroomery for a couple months now but today is my first post (smile). I inoculated my 5 BRF jars on 11/12/13. Checked on my jars for the first time on 11/16/13 and had first sign of mycelium . Of course now it is hard for me to leave them alone. Thinking of getting a rubber band and snapping myself with it every time I think about it LOL. So since the 16th the growth in 4 jars seems to be going steadily along and one jar seems to be either very slow or halted completely, won't know for a few more days on that one I imagine.

At first I thought as long as I had no colorful jars and only white I was in the clear. However, further reading has told me that sometimes even white can be deceiving. I am seeking your opinions on my jar pics, as to whether the growth is healthy mycelium or something else.

And yes, I see now why these 8 oz quilted jelly jars can be a pita! Especially for viewing the colonization process. It does seem that most of the white growth is following the inoculation pattern (4 holes, letting spore liquid hit the glass). It is almost like it is growing in stripes, for lack of a better word.

Also is it ok for the dry verm layer to sort of start drifting down inside the jar? Or does that indicate dryness?

Hopefully you can help me put me my children to rest so I can let them be! Thanks so much for your help!

Congrats, that's mycellium. As for the top layer I think it's ok. Next time, try slightly packing the substrate at the top before putting the top verm layer.

Just a tip. I know it's damn exciting  but try to leave the jars as undisturbed as they can be. Check every 3 or 4 days as they should be resting in the dark as long as possible.

Good luck !

I don't agree regarding the dark, but couldn't agree more about not disturbing PF cakes.  In the light or in the dark, it's very important to leave that dry vermiculite barrier intact as a protection against contamination.  What's that over the top of your jars?

I figured someone would ask and I know it's not necessary to have them still covered since I do have the dry verm layer but 4 of the jars have coffee filters over the tops and one has foil. I just wanted to see if the foil covered one did anything different than the rest. The main reason I have coffee filters over the others is more just to keep larger particles such as dust from falling in or on them since I do have them stored in a linen closet on a shelf.

I have been pretty good about leaving them alone until today. They still are coming along pretty well I think. Even the one that halted is doing better. One thing I noticed that was not present in the jars before is condensation. So, I guess they are definitely not overly dry. Is it normal for condensation to appear? It seems to be evenly spread out within the whole jar and isn't pooling.

Yup, that's normal.  Especially when they're working hard at colonizing a substrate and putting off a lot of heat, and then you bring it out into cooler air.

Yay!!! I am so glad to get your opinions on things! Thanks for taking the time. And wow.. my linen closet has never smelled so good! It really smells like dehydrated apples!

That makes sense.. it is pretty neat how that mycelium is so capable of creating it's own environment. Must be a pretty intelligent life form.

Ok so as for the pleasant sweetish-appley smell I believed to be eminating from my BRF jar storage area, now I am worried since I read it maybe a bad thing? The jars still appear normal to me (top pic & bottom pic) but you guys are the experts so if you could supply your opinion I'd be thankful. I can report that I have relocated them and I do not smell it now but the old area (linen closet) still does. Perhaps that aroma was already in there.

I am also going to include pics of some smaller jars I started at the same time. I didn't think they'd make it but once I flipped them they started moving along but I don't know the smaller ones seem awfully wet and I don't know just odd (middle pic). But using these stupid quilted jars make viewing difficult especially through the moisture.

A sweetish-appley smell would from bacteria. Also substrate starts to take a more slimy or wet appearance than before that usually from bacteria growing it in.

You really shouldn't be flipping your jars upside down.

Thanks for your response. Yea the jars in the middle pic I just tossed. They seemed way too wet, had two shades of white, the outer layer being more off white, very thin, and covering up all the mycelium (if it ever was mycelium). These were done with a different tek an I'll never ever ever ever try it again.

However, the 1st & 3rd pic jars are uniform bright white, do not appear fuzzy, and instead are ropey. I will probably hold off on tossing these in particular for now.

Good move.  Two shades of white likely means fungal contamination, and those are fucked.  The others, even if they're contaminated, are likely bacterial and can still be fruited with varying degrees of success.

December 4, 2013 update . . .

Thanks for checking up on these... there's no major changes from yesterday. The first 4 images are of the jars that I believe are doing ok. I tried to get all angles. There is still only one slow jar but it still seems to be progressing, slowly . As for the amount of water, not sure it has really increased I'd say, well not as much as the substrate has pulled together, or whatever it's doing, tightening? Hard to find the right word. Also, I know I have over handled them so I think that's why the top verm layer has sort of drifted around quite a lot.

As for the last 3 pics of the other jars, well these are just weird. In my mind they are done so they have been secluded until I can take them out to my Dad's property (large wooded area), where I can dispose of them properly. But I figure posting pics of them here in the contam forum might just help someone else out. These reallllly shrunk inside the jar, so much so that it appears as if whatever is growing in them is moving towards the glass, like straight up in some areas. So weird. It really is hard to tell because of the glass texture but you can tell in pic #6 . Also hard to tell if two shades of white actually are present.

Thanks for all your help!

Wanted to give an update but don't have time to put pics up just yet. I think I am happy to note that the wetness is decreasing. It seems like as the substrate shrinks the water is absorbed? I am hoping this is good anyhow.

So ended up so far having one contam, couldn't see it as it was under lid... think it's maybe trich, cobweb, and maybe something else? Tossed it. The others which were done correctly are so far so good.

Here's the contam

Here's a healthy one before rinsing off dry verm... and judging by the one above.. can totally see why this is important now.

So I thought I'd post some interesting pics since I have birthed all my jars and most have been in terrariums for 6 and 7 days now. I say terrariums because I have a few that I am unsure about and I do not want them to screw up the ones that I know are (at least appear to be) healthy.

This is one of the 1/4 pints done via shroom wizard tek:

By 36 hrs after birth it looked like this:

And smelled like this:

Then I sprayed peroxide on it for 2 days and now its growing these spikes in layers over the dry verm :

But smells like nothing.. absolutely no smell (and no more grey).

Then there is the one 1/2 pint (not done by shroom wizrd tek but by a recommended video) that I accidentally broke in half while rinsing it before dunking. These two broken halves were dunked for 36 hours. So I have the two halves also segregated in mini terrariums but they both smell just like a mushroom and look like this:

I also put only a moist layer of verm on top & bottom. They are doing more than the 4 I have in the big SGFC which is really lacking in RH. If I introduce these into the big SGFC will it help create more RH? And is this lumpiness normal?

I live in the Midwest.. and it's so dry here your fingers will literally split open for no reason.. it is that dry in my climate. My larger SGFC is built to specs: 1/4 inch holes spaced every 2 inches on all six sides... 4-5 inches of rinsed perlite...elevated on 4 1/2 pint jars.. has a 6500k CFL light on a 12/12 cycle. Misting & fanning 5-6x in every 24 hour period.

It's just so weird that the mini-terrariums which I sort of just threw together are doing more than the one built as it should be.

Wasn't sure if it was ok to post this info here since it is the contam forum but I figured if some of you guys are following this thread it'd be ok and clearly from atleast one of the above pics... there is some type of contam on the one...  not sure what type or if it is still even there.... what do you think?
