jnana yoga depends upon having recourse to a tantra Sri Vidya is a fabulous system but complicated but totally sexy but again Dzogchen is highly crucial for jnana was for me, jnana yoga means you're less involved in material life you spend all you days in contemplation, discerning subtle mental modes may be bhakti is more for you, stay in the relative in devotion some systems find completely purity within everything right here and now real jnana can see the ebb and flow of primordial timespace from the source in the here and now

I disagree that jnana has to do with tantra nessecarily, jnana seems to simply be thinking for ones self, it is the yoga of insight of questioning, or originating and innovating,
it is often mentioned as a correspondent of bhakti the yoga of love which is simply love purely,
both are needed in equalization to reach realization
too much bhakti and you become a blind follower capable of commiting horrible deeds because you think nothing through
too much jnana however can be somewhat the same, the isolated intellect without any feeling can often become very cruel, and hurtful,
the best scientists are able to combine logic with imagination this is the whole idea of quantum...
you could say it is jnana which leads you to the path, when you find, you cannot understand everything, or that logic alone is unsatisfying leads you to depressing ideations i.e. the Buddha's declaration that 'life is suffering' I disagree with, I believe that 'Life is Fun' why? because for some reason simply the change of wording does make me happier, it changes everything is a subtle way, and yet I don't understand why so we come to bad conclusions but somehow the heart makes a leap and allows us to change it, yet we cannot explain why it is changed, this is a synthesis of jnana and bhakti,
or you could bhakti leads you to the path because you started off with a love so great, and though maybe you went astray here and there, eventually because you were unceasing in your desire to only to do, you did find the ultimate and you were able to undo any bad which might have happened because the devotion for good real good was so strong
ultimately their trick is that they are really one in the same
kind of a beautiful paradox
yomo Buddha
EVERYTHING IS DIVINE LOVE!
you could say jnana yoga is equivalent to gnosis jnana is direct experience of the divine

nope
and that's the cosmic joke of it its the yoga of knowledge but one who attains the knowledge ultimately knows nothing
yoga means union so jnana yoga is like knowing yourself as the one, but ultimately that is the great unknown the knower & known have to dissolve into the one, so what remains is an open mystery, all you can know is that you are that
the philosophy of jnana yoga in the advaita vedanta tradition says that you are that which you seek, you are infinite love, bliss, awareness etc... so to question who you are & not settle on anything objective as the definition of your self, you can just aks 'who am i?' introspectively & not accept any answer (atma vichara/self inquiry) or everything that arises you dismiss as 'not-I not-I' (neti-neti) or you can discern between the unreal (impermanent) and the real (permanent), or contemplate/meditate on the sense 'I Am', or just remain self-aware
some schools teach that as a prerequisite to sucessfully practicing these you must have an intense longing for liberation, which i find is a form of bhakti, so i agree that devotion can be more suitable as it can prepare the mind for jnana

I just want to elaborate on this by adding that what the world considers to be knowledge is considered ignorance from the point of view of jnana. Take scientific knowledge for example, the scientist will maintain that the only way we can know things is through experiments and theories and hypotheses and so he builds of body of "scientific knowledge". However, from the point of view of the One, there is nothing else to know. All scientific (relative) knowledge is only knowledge about the One. All it really is, is naming and describing different phenomena of the One. Without knowledge of the One, only examining its limitless phenomena consists of ignorance. The phenomena are infinite, so no matter how much knowledge you gather, you are never any closer to knowing everything.

Yes in my experience, bhakti is neccessary because otherwise you will not be able to let go of the ego self. Everyone loves something, if you think of it evil people are not evil because they dont love, but because they love the wrong things, themselves and their own power and pleasure more than they love God and neighbor. So, without bhakti it is very hard to let go of oneself and merge in the One. Rather than being pleasurable, the experience will be terrifying because it will feel as though you are losing all that you hold dear.

i agree, although jnana is impossible without love of truth
of course people can and do hide behind philosophy & pretend they are a jnani but a true jnani is the embodyment of love
jnana or bhakti automatically lead to each other, its impossible to have one & not the other

Yes, they are the same. They only appear different to the ignorant mind, self inquiry and loving God are the same thing.

Jnani (Realized Soul) 1. He who has Jnana (Knowledge) is a Jnani (realized soul). He is only a rishi (sage). There are two types of Jnanis(realized soul):
a. Who realized the self but cannot express about the state to others. b. Who not only experienced the self but also could preach others about the blissful state; they are called as trainers, prophets and aacharyas.
2. One who finds the source of mind is a Jnani (realized soul). One who finds the source of nature is a scientist. A scientist is waivered by the events in this world but it is not the same with a Jnani (realized soul). It is because jnani never looks at the world to be different from him.
3. He who experiences the truth is a sat purusha (jnani). In whose presence your mind senses and heart become calm is a satpurusha.
4. He who knows (discovers) himself is a Jnani (realized soul). Jnani’s eyes resemble the eyes of a dead sheep. There is only one difference between a jnani and ajnani. Jnani knows that he is the self and he has a body, but ajnani thinks that he is the body and has a self. As the sun is unaware of darkness, so also jnani is unaware of sorrow. Our likes and dislikes are the root cause of our sorrow and who overcomes them is a jnani. Jnanis body is a temple. God takes up the burden of protecting Jnanis body.
5. Without any of our effort we get the sweet fragrance in the vicinity of jasmine flowers. Similarly presence of Jnani is always filled with peace and bliss. Just by visiting a Jnani we develop an attitude of reforming ourselves. Of the ancient times three important people preached the path of Jnana. They are
a. Gautama Buddha b. Adi Shankara Charya c. Bhagawan Ramana
6. One who follows the Jnana path will think nothing belongs to him, where as one who follows Karma Path will think everything belongs to him.
7. Only the one who overcomes time and lust can become Jnani. He becomes Jnani who sacrifices himself for the sake of self. Every king cannot become a jnani but when Jnani becomes the king, people will enjoy great prosperity. That is the reason we still discuss about the Rama Rajyam (Kingdom of Rama) till date.
8. Jnani has no work either in this world or in the other worlds but still work is carried through jnani. Jnani has nothing to do but things happen through him. Jnani has come into this world only to lead the society towards equanimity. It is only jnani who can love this world. Whose heart is filled with peace eternally can only love this world and not by them who always burn in the fire of ego. Jnani’s sight is that of Shiva (self) and ajnanis sight is that of slave (corpse).
9. Jnani is an embodiment of silence. But as our intellect doesn’t understand the silence, out of grace, Jnani preaches us through words. Jnani need not think of helping this world, but the mere sustenance of his body benefits the world immensely. Jnani never thinks that the world is benefitted through him. If he thinks so how can he become a Jnani?
10. A person travelling in the path of Jnana doesn’t own any object in this world. But a person trading the path of karma owns every object in this world.
http://www.srinannagaru.com/articles/english/amv/Jnani.pdf
It is basically enlightenment.
Personally I don't see, :
Quote:
a. Who realized the self but cannot express about the state to others. b. Who not only experienced the self but also could preach others about the blissful state; they are called as trainers, prophets and aacharyas.
As being independent or mutually exclusive, and it really isn't, because both can be true regardless of the false dichotomy presented in the text.

i think these eyes look quite beautiful

i thought you wrote all that at first rather than a copy & paste but it doesn't make any difference really it's mostly accurate i like that it points out Buddha was a Jnani and taught the path of Jnana, inquiry into the Self, or rather inquiry into the not-Self
Ramana Maharshi points this out here...
Questioner: How the find the Atman (Self)?
Ramana: There is no investigation into the Atman. The investigation can only be into the non-Self. Elimination of the non-Self is alone possible. The Self being always evident will shine forth itself.

The face of Ramana Maharshi is the most blessed sight my eyes have ever beheld.
I think the invulnerability to trance is the most interesting line in this thread. It's very important to understand this. Often times (and I did this myself for years) people associate meditation or realization with trance. THis is only natural because it is even compared with trance by teachers such as Ramana Maharshi and it is a state which pre-exists thought, which again is suggestive of trance.
So although realization can be thought of as similar to trance, or even the very definition of trance, there is a major different between realization and all other trance states. That difference is that in realization, self awareness is never lost. You may lose awareness of the body and the mind, but when fully self-realized, you never again forget who you are.

yeah, i'm admittedly biased but feel he was the greatest sage of recent times, when i rarely have a yearning for something that's 'lost' it's to be in his presence again, i sometimes get a massive upsurge of wishing he was still physically here that brings tears to my eyes, but quickly i recognize that i am never out of his presence as he is my own Self! and this is due to his grace, which is grace itself
rather than practice this or think of that one can merely begin to feel Ramanas gaze upon him & that gaze, the eye of jnana, will be revealed not as coming from somewhere outside you looking upon you, but as coming from your very Self thus consuming your entire being
in regards to trance states you must always enter & exit a trance to infer that it was a trance state, so this can not be jnana which is beyond time it can feel like we gain & lose jnana, like the sun appears to rise & set, yet the shine is always shining
