I am not implying that the 11,000 deaths were gun related, it is fact, no implication required. 11,000 people we killed because they were shot by someone else. Interestingly nearly 20,000 died because they shot themselves. That is a whole other argument.
A kid in grade 3 also took a (live??) grenade to school for show and tell here in Newcastle just this year.
But you managed to find 1 incident where people where killed through a school (university) shooting. 1 in the 17 years we have had tough gun control. Even then it doesn't compare to some of the "lighter" incidents that occur in the USA. Would something like Monash even make the news in US these days?
That kinda stuff is outlandish and tragic here, it seems commonplace over there

First you say that the 11000 gun crimes were gun deaths, than you say "11,000 murders with the weapon being a gun? that equates to gun crime = murder?" implying that I mistook gun crimes for murders, then you say that they are deaths, either I'm misreading something in here or you need to make up your mind.
Second, that was three shooting and yes they would make the news. And school shootings are uncommon here too, but a. we're a more populous country, b. we play it up really big in the news, and c. we play it up really big in the news.

Not the devil, you gotta face the facts. No matter how you look at it, no other economically developed country has anywhere near the problem with guns and violence and murder that the US has.

Guns are a problem here, I admit it... too damned many guns. But we have a bigger problem: extremists, mental illness and hateful douchebags.
It's a bad combo for sure though.

No other country has the combination of drugs laws, gangs, location, and culture to make just the right stew to feed murder rates.
First off drugs are very illegal here well that's not much different from everywhere else, but then we're right on top of the world's biggest suppliers of cocaine and some pretty major heroin sources. As well as plenty of cartel controlled marijuana. These drugs often stay in the hands of violent gangs which fight with each other constantly. Then of course violence is semiglorified here and that helps the nutjobs go a little further. But the guns are already out there and making them illegal won't reduce gun crime in the us, it will only prevent the more honest citizens from having guns while the gangs and cartels keep their already illegal guns.
The only way to drastically lower gun deaths in the us is to legalize drugs.

I've sworn of arguing guns here, but it seems like Americans will make the most convoluted arguments just so the one obvious common denominator remains blameless.

I could say the same of other countries. The obvious denominator is the drug war, it is the biggest cause of non-war violence in the world today.

Mental ilness is the least of it
you're saying 1% of the population is commiting more murders then the 99%
they aren't
maybe one of them will go off, but the majority don't and a greater number self harm. Most are victims of abuse actually, just that when one guy once a year does something and then another type of guy with no distinguishable traits does it, one's front page and the others an after thought of something you read on facebook

I don't think he meant mental illness like that, more like people who choose to kill people should automatically be classified as mentally ill. I could easily have mistook it though.

The drug war is being fought in other countries. People think the violence in Mexico spreads over the border. It rarely does. Most counties that border Mexico have lower murder rates than the rest of their state. Mexico pays for the US war on drugs much more than we do.
http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/washington/2011-07-15-border-violence-main_n.htm
Quote:
For this story, USA TODAY studied crime trends along the U.S.-Mexico border, using data reported to the FBI from city and county police agencies in the four border states — California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. It found that violent crime rates were on average lower in cities within 30, 50 and 100 miles of the border — the distances used to fit various definitions of the "border region." Statisticians interviewed by USA TODAY confirmed the results. Because the data reported by the local agencies does not include kidnapping, the newspaper also had the FBI review its kidnapping investigations along the border. Among the major findings: •The murder rate for cities within 50 miles of the border was lower in nearly every year from 1998 to 2009, compared with the respective state average. For example, California had its lowest murder rate during that time period in 2009, when 5.3 people were murdered per 100,000 residents. In cities within 50 miles of the border, the highest murder rate over that time period occurred in 2003, when 4.6 people were murdered per 100,000 residents. •The robbery rate for cities within 50 miles of the border was lower each year compared with the state average. In Texas over that time span, the robbery rate ranged from 145 to 173 per 100,000 people in the state, while the robbery rate throughout Texas' border region never rose above 100 per 100,000. •Kidnapping cases investigated by the FBI along the border are on the decline. The bureau's Southwestern offices identified 62 cartel-related kidnapping cases on U.S. soil that involved cartels or illegal immigrants in 2009. That fell to 25 in 2010 and 10 so far in 2011.

What I mean is mental illness in all it's guises, both diagnosed and undiagnosed. There is a stigma in this country against mental illness. People don't want to be diagnosed as having a mental problem... they want to appear normal, self-actualized and in charge of their lives, and so they avoid even talking about mental problems, let alone actually trying to do something about them.
Too many people here think mental illness is a copout for weak people who just want freebies; and they are pretty vocal about it. If you are genuinely mentally ill here, you are as likely to get ridiculed and told to 'pull yourself out of it' and 'quit being a whiner' as you are to get help.
And so the problem only gets worse.

Oh Mexico definitely has its share of violence, but we get plenty from other sources as well. I believe that if all countries just dropped the drug war the world's non-war murder rate would drop dramatically.
