I'm sorry if it came across that way. What I'm trying to say is that this seems a highly paranoid, untrusting and unfriendly manner to interact with people, and not something to be 'cool' with or proud of.

I mean, I like that your constitution allows you the right to bear arms and defend yourselves, and there's some pretty awesome freedoms that have come about from the US, I think. But when you get to the point that you need to carry weapons when meeting new people in order to feel safe, that's really not a good thing IMO.

If I felt I needed to arm myself when meeting someone new - i.e. I felt I might need to potentially kill the person - I would be strongly avoiding this situation and finding someone else or meeting under circumstances which did not require this measure to be taken.

Its just a bad idea to meet strangers one on one with no way to defend your self should they want to harm you, although for most people pepper spray is probably the best option.

Reminds me though of the time in the UK when a burglar with a knife broke into a police academy pretending to be a cop (and remember no one but the criminals here can have guns) and was going to kill them when someone with a sword came in and saved them all then left: first thing the police do? Try to find him so they can arrest him for having a sword. Not related this just reminded me of that.

So accidentally shooting someone means you had deadly intentions?

 Does accidentally stabbing someone with a kitchen knife make a kitchen knife a deadly weapon? Or could it perhaps be the intent with which an item is used that determines what it is?

Yeah.  A gun is just a thing.  Its not a deadly weapon until it's in the hands of someone who has deadly intentions.  Americans (the ones who own guns and love them) are proud of their right to own the means to defend themselves from unknown evils in the world.  We think it would be crazy (as crazy as you see us) for the government to actively prohibit law-abiding citizens from possessing the same level of firepower as is readily available to the common criminal that one would find breaking into one's home.

 different perspectives, i suppose

A gun might be a thing, just as a piece of food is a thing, but these things have intended uses and so carry intent and meaning. Rocking up with a gun, as opposed to a piece of fruit or cake, for instance, carries a pretty different meaning and intent.

While I don't think it's the best policy - promoting gun use - I think it's a fine right, in principal. And I agree your government shouldn't disarm you - but only because of the threat they represent and disperse around the globe. If they weren't so heavy-handed and oppressive, I don't think you'd need to worry so much.

So I wasn't commenting on your right to bear arms and defend yourself... but how threatened do you guys generally feel (mainly, I mean towards each other, or generally while out and about)?

Yeah, different perspectives, I guess. We get a decent amount of alcohol-fuelled violence in Australia but for the most part it's pretty safe - so long as you know when and where not to be. Perhaps this can just serve as a reminder to be thankful I live in a pretty friendly and relatively trusting place (in which guns are mostly prohibited).

It's usually safe in the US, but horror stories abound and sometimes they really do happen, and this tends to put people a touch on the paranoid side.

A kitchen knife is designed and intended for preparing food. It becomes a weapon when someone wields it as such. A gun serves no other purpose than as an implement to hurt or kill living things (except, of course, if you're using it for recreation - like target shooting - but we aren't talking about that).

nothing bad has ever happened to me or any of my loved ones (luckily), yet i still own a gun, used to carry it in my truck when i had to drive to shitty parts of my old city, and kept it on my bedside every night in the event of a break-in.  bad shit happens, and if it happens some day to me, i'll have the means at my disposal to hopefully prevent any lasting physical harm from being done to me or anyone else around.

thats the mindset of ALL of the responsible gun owners I know.  and thats all but one of them (the one just wanted a cool gun).

I'm just saying not everybody who shoots someone has deadly intentions.  I wouldn't consider defending your body or property with a gun means you have deadly intentions.

Yes, of course. You have it for the purpose of harming/killing (i.e. defense), and you practice your skills for this reason, I presume.

If you do target practice for fun, then for that time it's not really being used as a weapon. But as soon as it leaves the range and you're no longer using it recreationally, it's a weapon.

Guns are used to shoot people, targets, and animals.  Just because one specific gun hasn't been fired at someone does not mean guns, as a group, aren't weapons.

Yeah well I sold a cheap ass electronic stand off craigslist to some creepy old dude. This guy was weird as fuck, touched my shoulder and shit when I was selling the stand to him. A few weeks later I kept getting phone calls from him saying the rack was missing parts. I just ignored it him.

Then one time me and a friend were leaving my apartment and I see him in a different vehicle then before posted in the front of my complex. As soon as he saw me he reclined his seat back and put his hand over his face. :nonono: ..Then some big ass dude jumped in his car and he sped off.. I reported it but they thought I was crazy saying its not illegal to stake out someones apartment ?!?..

That guy was up to no fucking good..thankfully I caught him and blew his cover.. Not sure how long he was watching me... and I'm guessing he was going to use the big guy to strong arm me.. I almost bought a gun that day..

Then my walking stick is a weapon because it serves a secondary purpose as a "just in case" weapon if necessary. The idea of a weapon is worthless unless someone actually intends to do something with it, until then its just a shiny piece of metal that could be used as a weapon, I would say that self defence is not intent to use something as a weapon but rather a planned reaction to an attack.

What you backed it up with:
"something (such as a gun, knife, club, or bomb) that is used for fighting or attacking someone or for defending yourself when someone is attacking you."

If you cannot see the direct contradiction, you cannot read.

it that case everything is a weapon. but i agree that every weapon carries its own level of danger, and yes a gun would be pretty high up there, but it doesn't necessarily make it a bad thing, especially when you live in dangerous places were a bunch of fools, more so than responsible guns owners, carry guns.
