Where in the world is the best place for mushrooms?
    #19169089 - 11/21/13 09:09 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I was just wondering, what location in the world can you find the greatest diversity of mushroom species, all year round?

I'm assuming it would have to be someplace that gets a decent amount of rainfall and stays fairly warm but not freezing temperatures.

Any ideas?

Oregon coastal mountain range....that's my answer.  You should check it out for sure!

New Zealand is probably more exciting and rich in fungi but I don't live there.  yet.

I guess it really depends on what you like to hunt for. Here in Ohio we have a great Morel season. BUT I would love to get out west and hunt them in higher elevation someday.

All year round?

Probably Panama.

Generally the best place for mushrooms depends on what time of year it is.  Right now the west coast of the USA is pretty good.

A lot of places are starting to get too cold for good mushroom growth, the next big season will be the California coastal season.

In April - June it's season in Japan and Australia, June - September is southern Mexican season, and in October it starts again in Washington.

If you don't want to go to Japan/Australia you can go to the mountains of California instead, same time frame.

Sweet guys I'll check out those locations.

Would SoCal coast be a good place this time of year too?

The SoCal coast is good when it gets rain, but usually it does not get rain, so people generally do not travel there for mushrooms except for the fungus fairs in February.

February is the best time in SoCal most years.  A lot of people start in Washington in October and work their way down the coast until they get to SoCal in February, as the season gets earlier the further south you go.
