Lol, I like how when a politician gets arrested for drugs it can be because he has a legitimate psychological disorder but when millions of lower-class citizens are caught with drugs it's because what? They're irresponsible and immoral for making the decision to be addicted to drugs?

Ok, he's going to treatment so there should be no repercussions for him. Regular people? Oh, well, they need to be incarcerated and lose their jobs because of being labeled as felons.

There has been some really great discussion in this thread. I would just like to point out that urine testing welfare recipients will most likely only catch cannabis users. Most hard drugs are undetectable after 24 to 72 hours. Cannabis is detectable for 1 to 3 months depending on the amount of body fat that one has. I think cannabis should be legal and I don't care if food stamp recipients smoke weed. Weed is very inexpensive in most of the USA and its free if you grow it outside. I think it is absolutely abhorrent that this this politician would vote to take food away from starving families because of cannabis while he is using the tax payers money to do cocaine.

:whathesaid:

Drug testing in general is vastly biased towards cannabis users. For example, how workplace drug testing for "safety" reasons is totally asinine and great for catching people who use cannabis in their free time while not at work.

Another thing that has occurred to me over and over while reading this thread is that even while welfare drug testing obviously isn't exclusively identifying cannabis users over hard drug users (it just is much easier to do so) what about people on welfare who are spending their money on alcohol? Alcoholism is extremely prevalent in low-income areas. I've witnessed many poor people who receive food stamps and still scrounge up money for beer or liquor. Is that just alright then?

I'm just saying if people are going to get all pissed off about welfare recipients taking advantage of their tax dollars and smoking weed I can't see why we would force them to take random UA's for illegal drugs but then not test them for alcohol just because it's legal for those over the age of 21.

The idea of people wasting money unnecessarily for recreation when they could spend it on food applies to alcohol in literally exactly the same way. It's actually worse in the case of testing for THC since alcohol is full blown addictive while cannabis is, at most, habit forming. Alcoholics are a lot more irresponsible in obtaining alcohol at all costs (even when they can't afford it) then habitual pot-heads are about getting cannabis because they'd prefer to have it.

So I want you to find a soul and to stop letting the media pit you against your brother while the corporations take the real tax money.

It's not their money, it's my money and I should have a say in how it's spent. Letting these people buy booze and drugs is just keeping them poor and continuing the cycle. That's not love at all.

I don't think reps should be paid at all. They should meet twice a year, do only the VITAL business of the union, and then go back to their real jobs- with term limits. However, the big government progs that turned a land of decentralized authority into an all powerful Super State created this system in their lust for control and this what you get- massive corruption to the core.

I agree with all of this, except what I struck through. Living on government handouts? No alcohol, drugs, or hell, even tobacco for you. Better your situation if you want to waste money on non-essentials.

Why the strike through?? I know a ton of people that will and do steal alcohol. I worked in a liquor store for 2 1/2 years in my late teens/early 20's and daily theft was just accepted. I think our individual store wrote off something like £1,000 (probably near $2,000) per week in theft they knew would occur and couldn't be avoided.

Why does alcohol seem more legitimate than pot? Or am I misinterpreting your post?

If one is so poor that they cannot afford the very basics then they should not waste money on luxuries like drugs and alcohol.

So we should throw money at a program to drug test people even if it waste money and ruins lives

which it indeed does

I don't get why anyone is saying this, you are all accusing low income people of not being able to control their vices during a recession

this is  hate speech

no- it is not hate speech.  You are confusing what we are saying about rich money grubbing politicians and need poor people with the rights of regular citizens.

if you wanted to buy coke and blow your paycheck that's fine-- just dont come to me for grocery money after you do that.  I slap a hoe.

Ah..the ol' Rob Ford excuse.  Isn't that too new of an excuse to be used by another politician already?  Should have gone with an excuse a little less recent and it might have been more believable.

"Yes, I have smoked crack cocaine," Ford said to a group of reporters, adding that it was an isolated incident that occurred "probably in one of my drunken stupors."
