I've noticed that a lot of people on the shroomery obsess over cats. Personally I have never liked them even a little bit. They shit in a box in the house, smell awful, and leave hair everywhere, among other things.
Who else on the shroomery hates cats?

Here! Indeed i see no reason for liking cats.

You don't have to walk them to take a shit it's pretty nice actually and I don't know what people are talking about but I don't think cats have a smell really. Maybe they smell kind of like a running vacuum cleaner if anything at least that's what mine smell like when you smell them up close. In contrast to the natural other choice, dogs, I've smelled some dogs that smelled AWFUL owners hadn't bathed them in months.

They don't smell nearly as bad as dogs, birds or reptiles, actually. Other than that, cats are really nice. But to each his own. Nobody requires you to like cats.

I love me some cats, dogs too, but dogs really get on my nerves at the same time.

I like both cats and dogs. Them mofos are both cool in my book.
But yeah, for the record, cats smell a lot better than dogs.

I hate cats but I'm kind of biased.. I was viciously attacked by one when I was around 5 and ended up having to get a ton of stitches with no pain medicine.. I don't really remember the pain specifically anymore but I do remember for a fact it was one of the most painful experiences of my life.
I'm also a gardener and outside cats are one of the biggest damned pests there is. They go where they want, they don't obey fences. They dig up the beds and shit in them. Few things piss me off more than digging around in my bed and pushing my fingers into a nice big pile of cat shit buried just beneath the surface. Not even my pets and I have to clean up after them. So fuck whoever has the outside cats in this neighborhood.. I hate them.

Wild cats are pretty cool, but I'm not a fan of cats as pets. A huge percentage of people are allergic, their piss smells really strong, and they can give you an infection that may make you go crazy.

Yeah, that sucks. It's one of the reasons why my cats are indoor cats. Their own safety and the impracticality of them entering the house after they would have gone out are other reasons.

Can't stand most domestic cats.
They stink (depending on training and waste management). They're annoying to play with (i.e. they get their claws out and scratch you). They often shit in gardens and ruin the plants. They're cruel - torturing and killing birds and rodents for fun. To me, they seem selfish. I kind of admire their "I don't give a fuck" attitude but they give very little, and when they apparently do, they want something in return. Pretty shit way to be as a pet/buddy/someone who gets fed and sheltered.
Generally, I think they make terrible domestic pets, and I don't like them being in the neighbourhood I live in. That said, I have some friends/family with cats and there's the occasional cool cat and I don't mind giving them pats - but generally they're not my favourite things.

Rarely, really. Only when they get really old and can't clean themselves, they stink. But if you pay a little attention to the kind of cat litter you use and you clean out the litter box once in a while, you can't really smell cats in a house.

Uh, yeah. They may do that. But they generally won't hurt humans on purpose, but they do sometimes get carried away. In my experience, it's not really an issue though, especially if you use a toy instead of play with your hands...

True that; see above.

The cats I have known killed to eat their prey or give it to their owners. But it's true that a cat will keep killing even when it's well fed.

Thats your perception, really. My cats are really attached to me and seek me out as well (especially) when they won't get fed, for the express purpose of cuddling and petting. If you mean that the cat won't pet you back...yeah, true. You might want to get a girlfriend if that's what you looking for. Dogs generally don't pet back either, you see.
So it seems to me that the drawbacks you just listed are to a large extent based on how you keep your cats and what you expect from them. If you expect them to be very un-catlike, then a cat is sure to disappoint.

I don't know. Maybe its the cat. Mine doesn't spray or stink. When it shits it stinks but then again my gf cleans its tray like every day so it stays pretty fresh. it was a stray that befriended me while I was visiting family. My uncle wanted me to shoot it, but he didn't know we had become friends already. So I told him I'd take it with me on my road trip. Wanted to drop it off at a rest stop a couple times, but we made it and she like indoor living now. He feeds birds so he hates having the cat come and kill them. I don't think cats should be left outside. They do a lot of damage to the environment.

Yes, that's my perception, naturally (hence, "To me,"). It's all my opinion based on my experience with cats. Don't take it personally.
I'm not saying there aren't friendly, decent cats out there but in my experience they only hang around you when they want attention or food. As opposed to dogs, who might often do the same thing, but more often are just there because they're your friend and they like you. Dogs seem to show much more appreciation for the attention and care you give them, whereas cats just seem to have an air of entitlement and general disdain, which is simply unjustified.
I've never kept a cat and don't intend to for reasons stated, and I'm not looking for anything in a cat or pet; I have no desire to keep any animals, especially not for the purpose of fulfilling what a human relationship might provide, as you suggest. My expectations on cats are low and these are usually met and rarely exceeded.
My only experience living with a cat: I lived with a girl who was slack and neglectful of her cat (I ended up having to wash the stinking litter tray (which was disgusting) and replace the litter, and feed/give water to it regularly - which I did not want to do, nor even have the cat in the house). The cat pissed in everyone's room (except mine, which I undesirably keep isolated to keep the cat out), and in the lounge. On hot days with little ventilation, the house still smells like cat piss. The cat was not obedient in the slightest (which I don't expect cats to be), or rather had no comprehension or respect for our wishes, and walked all over kitchen table and furniture. To my surprise, this cat was very friendly and sociable and generally a 'nice' cat - however, I did not want it around me at all. Its incessant curiousity and eagerness to get into my room was frustrating. Unfortunately for the cat (and us), the house was not suitable for a cat and it was miserable living here (though the owner insisted she 'loved' it (despite the neglect) and could not acknowledge this). All in all, I felt the cat did not make a good housemate, added very little to the house and was the source of many problems.
