Find out which campus of U Wisc that Tom Volk is teaching at and go there.  Otherwise, Penn State has a great program.

In the midwest ? Sorry if this is in the wrong place just thought I'd the best answer here amongst the wise and well read. Thanks

I'd think mycology would generally be covered under botany. The best college's in the Midwest? University of Chicago or Case Western in Cleveland would both be prestigious. It's hard to imagine that the curriculum would be that different from University to University. So if you want the best degree it'll be the one with the best school name on it. I will in no way believe your career as a mycologist would be better with a degree from U of Wisc than from Princeton or some other prestigious school. Tom Volk is certainly a great guy but in no way will his class you take make your degree more lucrative when you earn it. It might just be best to apply to the best school you think you can get into, they all have botany and mycology will surely be taught.

Kindly regards.

I just saw on the North American Mycological Association site a list of university cultivation interest sites. Of course Penn State is represented, since PA is the nation's commercial mushroom bastion, but also Cornell, Purdue, and Iowa State.

Choosing where to get a degree has multiple facets. Ellis Dee stated you should pick the topped ranked universities; while I agree to a certain extent, it really depends on your goals and aspirations.

I remember hearing a guy speak after an A.C.M. programming contest that to get a job that "meant" something in the software industry, you needed a degree plus advanced degrees from Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, Carnegie-Melon, etc.  Let's just say that the winners that year, Georgia Tech, not to mention all the other competitors, i.e. State schools, did not find his comments too inspiring.

Go for the best school that meets what you want to accomplish. Choosing a place where you can be mentored by an expert who shares your interests is the best route.

Find a place you can afford, that has faculty who can support your interests, and that has bright students that you can associate with to further your studies.  That place may be Case-Western, U of Chicago, Penn State, U. Penn, Stanford, or the local technical college.

Check out as many places as you can online, and visit as many as possible.

Going to a top-ranked university where you are miserable won't help your outlook. Instead, go to the best that fits your interests, your lifestyle, and your needs.

Good luck in your searching.

Edit: But none of this has to do with Advanced Mycology. It's sort of an "I wanna be advanced" thread.

Way to fuck up a thread so nobody else can use the search engine to get the same answer.  This isn't a personal 'dear abby' service where you get special attention.  Most people use the search engine and never post.  Deleting the original post is rude and inconsiderate of others.
