Can someone identify these two types of mushrooms from Melbourne's South East?
    #19165950 - 11/20/13 03:21 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Hey there, I'm very new to mushroom hunting but I have noticed a small, brownish mushroom growing in a few different places (I have this obsession with moss so my head is always pointed to the ground) so I decided to go looking today and I found two different types.

This is the first, the one thst grows pretty commonly. Sorry for the grossness, I tried to go back to where I found them to take a better picture for you but the rest were all gone (there was a guy looking around before, perhaps he took them?):

And here's the other one:

Neither bruise blue like all the posts say for psilocybin types, but I was wondering if they were edible (although the first type doesn't look too good haha)

Thanks guys

Hey, which one are you referring to? I looked it up but I can't be sure. It looks like the black tar one in shape, but has the colour of the big whitish ones.

And what of the other one?

They are both coprinoid fungus of some kind.
Where they growing close together?
The first one may be a Coprinopsis.

They were growing within 200m of each other. But I am pretty sure the gooey black one grows where I found the white one. I saw it there 6 months to a year ago. I'm not sure how long the system lasts for, so I don't know if that's relevant.

Thanks for you help. So my guess is that they are both inactive, but edible?

You won't find anything active in Melbourne this time of year. You want to be looking in autumn, and you should be looking for subs (Psilocybe subaeruginosa)

Thanks Tas. I thought as much about active mushrooms, but I guess it doesn't hurt to keep trying. I don't think I would know subs by sight? apparently. The cone top seems to be all I recognise, and apparently at least 2 types around here have them (I just found another, it seems).

Why do mushrooms grow all year round, if active mushrooms prefer the cold months?

There are zillions of species of mushrooms, each with its own preferred season. Morels like the spring, wine caps like the summer, and Psilocybe subaeruginosa happens to like the fall and winter. It's the same with plants: you can find flowers blooming all the time if your climate is reasonable, but you will not see apple trees blooming in the middle of winter or hellebores blooming in summer.
