Do snakes prey on those consumed with fear?
    #19165701 - 11/20/13 02:23 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I just got an idea theory in my head; what if snakes don't prey on certain people because of who they are and the energy they project?
Assuming snakes have other food options

Snakes generally don't prey on people regardless.

Snakes prey on humans when snakes are filled with fear, not the other way around.

Just had a picture in my head of a snub snake going around the village judging people.

Yeah this. Stories about snakes actually chasing people are myths. I mean yeah I guess through history there may have been a mentally fucked in the head snake that actually chose to chase a dude or two but dude, when a snake looks up at you (outside of pythons, king cobras, etc.), it sees a freaking tower of potential predator.

It just wants you to go away.

If they feel trapped by you though...then yeah you gonna get

Yeah, I agree with what others have said. Even the world's largest snakes (green anacondas, reticulated pythons, Burmese pythons, etc.) don't prey on humans. The width of our shoulders is too wide for any snake to get its mouth around, even with their dislocated bottom jaw. That being said, I know of at least one case where an adult man was constricted to death by a wild reticulated python, and the snake tried eating him, but it could not swallow him all the way. Most giant snakes know adult humans are too big to eat. However, small children could potentially be eaten by a giant snake. I believe it's happened before, but it's an incredibly rare occurrence. On a side note, one in four members of the Agta tribe from the Philippines has been attacked by reticulated pythons, but that's because Agta adults are only 4.5 feet tall, on average.

There are also many cases of snakes in captivity constricting people to death, but it doesn't have anything to do with 'the energy they project,' IMO. It's usually because people feed their snakes in the same enclosure that they live in. You're supposed to feed them in a separate enclosure, but because people feed them in their normal enclosure, every time they open it up, the snake is expecting food, so it might attack them by mistake. Giant snakes also have the urge to constrict stuff with no intent on eating what they constrict. Sometimes you just get unlucky, and the snake decides it's gonna constrict you.

Yeah I recall this case. I believe when he was found the python had stopped at his shoulders, as like you said it couldn't open his jaws wide enough to finish the job. As for smaller snakes -- there have been myths that black mambas have been known to on occasion "chase" humans, although I find that really hard to believe. What's the point for a mamba? Even if it gets to you obviously he won't be able to eat you. It's just myth I'm sure.

I've heard that about black mambas, too. It's gotta be a myth. I know black mambas are the fastest snake in the world, being able to go like 12 mph. Maybe that has something to do with the origin of that myth? Like if a group of people were standing around one, it would have to head straight at one of the people, making them think it was chasing them? I don't know. :confused2:

Ok so.  There have been large snakes that have eaten people.  But usually its because a human walks or swims past and triggers a feeding response.  Some snakes are smart and can be aggressive a couple cobras come to mind at the moment.  Just like humans each animal has its own demeanor and moods.  I worked with one that would test us by lunging.  We'd use a tennis racket to block its advances out of the cage.  After a couple fails it would go to the back of the cage go into the veg and hides and sneak up around the side and try to hit us from the side as we reach into the cage.

This guy has a bunch of snakes with different personalities.

Either that guy has a death-wish :death:, or those cobras were venomoids. Near the end of the first video, that cobra nearly bit him right in the face, but the guy was so laid back about it. :what: I'd like to buy a venomoid, but it's kinda cruel that they remove the snake's venom glands.

I believe they are all HOT.  I don't think people should keep them if they have to take out the venom  glands.  I guess in some applications its needed. Pretty sure this guy has been working with them for a long time.  In some videos he has new snakes and he is way more careful around them while figuring out their attitudes .

Yeah, I don't like the venomoid trade. I mean I'd like to have a venomous snake, such as a pygmy rattlesnake, and a venomoid would be way safer than a hot one, but I don't wanna support the people who mutilate snakes. That guy has some nerves of steel to let those snakes get so close to him. However, if you're experienced enough with handling them, you know how to read their body language, determine their strike range, etc. I think that guy was letting them get a little too close though.

When i lived in Florida I had several cotton mouths chase me. Those fuckers will chase you 6 or 7 feet. Only snake I know of that seems to have an attitude. All the rest would rather get away then attack. Then I found out snakes taste good so the tables have been turned.
