Hello, long time reader finally signed up for an account

Hello,
Like most here, I am interested in providing myself with some exotics for occasional use and long term storage for future weekends free of responsibilities.

About 14-15 years ago, I bought a sweet shroom set up that used a PVC framed tent that claimed to yield 10# every month. I don't know what the actual yield could've been because I had to take it all down and move to a new house during the process. I ended up enrolling myself into college and didn't get that project restarted.

Fast forward to a couple months ago when I decided to order up some spores after I found my copy of 'The Mushroom Cultivator' while digging through some old boxes that have been in storage the last decade or so.

I did up some brown rice flour and vermiculite cakes (with gypsum) and inoculated with Golden Teacher and B+, 5 half pints of each. They took forever to start and even longer to fully colonize. Only 5 jars we're contaminate free and usable. They were in a tray with a dome covering, that was set on top of a germinating/seedling/cloning heating mat made by Hydrofarm.

I broke up the cakes into a plastic tray (black trays used for cloning plugs with a clear humidity dome) and covered with coco/verm casing about 1/4" deep. The 2 GT cakes broken up on one side of the tray and the 3 B+ cakes on the other side.

The mycelia grew into the casing quickly and then I initiated pin set a few days ago when I unplugged the heating mat and began fanning and misting. I have the tray/dome inside of a plastic storage tub.

This morning when I went to turn on the light, mist and fan I could easily see 100+ pins. Maybe a dozen or so have a visible darkening of the cap area.

This morning I removed the dome from the tray, misted and fanned. Instead of placing the dome back on, I left it off and put the lid of the tub on top slightly ajar to allow for greater evaporation rates.

I hope to be able to harvest some mushrooms in the next 2-3 days, as that seems to be the time frame I'm working with.

Anyhow, I'm glad to be a part of this community and hope to be able to contribute as I develop my skills and understanding of this whole process from spore to harvest.

Please feel free to offer up advise on what I should've done or what I should be doing. I know I should've put down a layer of damp vermiculite before I broke the cakes up---I had taken about 10 dabs right before crumbling and completely spaced that layer before the cakes. Next time I'll do it for sure, plus I'll be able to see what different it makes in regards to yield.

As for harvesting, am I correct in thinking that I'll be able to take the first flush beginning in 2-3 days? I know without pics it's harder to say, the biggest pin with a dark cap that I see is maybe 1/8" wide and 1/4" tall. Plenty of pins on the casing that are a lot smaller.

Thanks to everyone

Mushie cultivation is the best place to post this, you'll get advice from more grow vets there.

Welcome, OP!  If you already have pins popping up, you should be good to pick in a few days    its the most fun when they grow SO MUCH in the 8hr you were sleeping, or at work, or etc.

Your cakes may have taken so long to colonize because they weren't incubating at the right temps

glad you registered, enjoy the fruits of your labor

Welcome buddy!  :mushroom2:

Yeah definitely check out the Cultivation forum.  The "Mushroom Cultivator" book has some outdated info.

A lot of "grow kits" have unnecessary and potentially counter-productive stuff.  For instance, you don't need a heating pad.  The only reason you would is if the ambient air temperature of your grow space is too cold, and then you have other problems anyway.  Colonization and fruiting should be done at room temperature.  Anything warmer than that and you're pretty much just giving contamination an extra edge to take hold.

Thanks for the info, I'd bet that's the problem with my jars taking forever to colonize. I have them in a 5 gal bucket with a styrofoam sleeve inside of it (it's a cooler insert I found at Lowe's for $2.50, couldn't pass it up) with the seed germinating heating mat I between the cooler and bucket walls to add warmth. Where we live, it's winter and cold, f'n cold! The house stays around 68*, which was too cold according to info from forever ago when I was into this back then. I'll unplug it and see how it goes at room temp. During the summer, it'll be low 70's in the house but I have big projects every summer that take all of my time but next summer I'll make the time for this project.

Thanks again

The heat mat was hindering myco colonization a ton! [Re: ramsbooty]

Since I unplugged the germinating heating mat, the 2 jars that had started slowly kicked into high gear. Another jar of WBS didn't show any colonization before and now is a good 20% colonized. I'm glad I signed up on this board, that heat mat would've continually caused super slow colonization and tons of non starter/contaminated jars.
