When I give a bum a dollar, I'm giving it to him out of love and because I'm a human being. If he chooses to use that money on drugs, that's his decision. But I did my part.
So I want you to find a soul and to stop letting the media pit you against your brother while the corporations take the real tax money.
I actually work at a homeless medical clinic and work with that population pretty closely.
After years of working with the homeless I've learned that giving them money is actually very hurtful to their wellbeing because it enables a self-destructive and often alcoholic lifestyle. Every one of my coworkers shares this opinion.
I used to give the homeless money all the time until I started working with them.
You'd be much better off giving those dollars to a non-profit organization.

Nice one of your own. What rights are given up when you go on food stamps?

There are some cruel people in this world. Someone living in poverty, in my opinion, has far more valid reasons to take drugs and escape their horrific existence than someone 'cursed with the disease of alcoholism...'.
What is the difference? The guy actively voting to deny people money/foodstamps to support themselves and families is taking drugs himself.. But he will "seek help", so it's all good.
News flash: most of your tax dollars get wasted on utter bullshit, subsidising multi-billion dollar corporations, totally needless military expansion year on year etc. You think a family should starve because someone smoked a joint with a buddy 3 weeks ago..?? (there is nothing that indicates proof is needed the people being tested actually bought the drugs themselves..).
Poor people are more likely to be suffering from mental health problems (thus more likely to have addiction issues), be from a minority, have a criminal record etc, none of which should make them exempt from basic social care to keep their kids in clothes, food and shelter. Also a LARGE percentage are likely to be veterans...
You really think the rich guy getting paid from taxes is more deserving to take drugs than a poor person? That is fucked up backwards logic IMO.

I already said in my previous post that I shouldn't have used the word "right" and I didn't want to argue semantics.
food stamps are a privilege, not a right. That much is obvious.
I believe that just like you have to pass your driving test and get a license to get a car, and just like you have to be insured, you should have to prove that you aren't using money for drugs if I'm the one paying for your food.
let's say your buddy was an addict and you kept giving him money for food and he kept trading it for heroin
would you feel cheated? damn right you would
edit: again, ZERO problems with the foodstamp program. but i'd rather see that money going to someone else who is more deserving.
boo hoo someone might have to stop smoking pot in order to get FREE FOOD.

Well first, you're assuming everybody on food stamps is also on drugs. This is definitely not the case.

I made no such assumption.
as said on page 1 and re-iterated above I have zero issue with foodstamps and I know several people who get them and are very deserving of them

Yet you want to take away their 4th amendment rights because of it.

@ Toiletdukthey have the ability to not apply for foodstamps, nobody is forcing them. thus, no violation of 4th ammendment.
again, privilege implies sacrifice. using public funds means you have to be accountable.

It's a small sacrifice to make in order to be fed. I of course think marijuana should be legalized, as does most of the public now. We are working on changing this.

How is it not?
violation of the 4th ammendment (which I assume you are referencing to urine tests) in this case is VOLUNTARY.
just as you can choose to allow a search, you are consenting to UA's when you sign up for FREE FOOD.
Free food is a huge fucking deal, there are lots of hungry people in the world and if someone can't stop getting high to be eligible I have zero pity
Quote:
ToiletDuk said: So we drug test them all?
sure, but making sure the UA's are completely random so they don't know when it will be. this guarantees a better chance of catching them

Your logic escapes me, but whatever. But don't take my word for it. The U.S. District Court in Orlando Florida agrees with me (or rather, I agree with them) Read it here -> http://www.aclufl.org/pdfs/2011-10-24-ACLUTanfOrder.pdf

appeal to authority is only valid when there is consensus among peers in the same field of expertise, which there is not.
just because someone agrees with your point of view doesn't sway mine.

Marijuana remains illegal on the federal level though.. So potentially this could see people legally allowed to grow weed at a state level, being left to starve due to a turn of bad luck/illness/injury etc. Children should be made to starve for this??
HHmmmm... Not so sure myself. America is just as addicted to drug testing as the population is to drugs. Maybe a more widespread change should be "worked on"....

I am not positive but I think the decision of whether or not to test food stamp recipients for drugs remains at the state level

I'm not either, I don't live in the US anymore so couldn't really care less, maybe find out the implications before getting so gung-ho in your posts??
