I have a promo plan that never expires, called the Oh Canada plan. $29/month for unlimited canada wide voice/text. With a $10/month Data upgrade.
Their "unlimited" data is a bit odd though. I have 10 gigs a month at full speed, and after the 10gigs, they cut me back to half speed, which is still good enough for youtube streaming and everything i normally do.
Cant watch HD youtube though once they cut me back to half speed. But I can sacrifice HD youtube to save myself $80/month with rogers.
When I was with rogers, my cell bill was over $100/month. so my current cell is $40/month. and then with not needed rogers internet, im saving $160/month since I switched.
WIND is only unlimited in their "home" zones though, they charge a bit when youre roaming. But I live in southern ontario, and have been able to go from hamilton, to toronto, and up to barrie without having extra charges.
Join wind, the more people switch to them, the faster they can expand their networks.
WIND is essentially non-functional in downtown Toronto. Worked fine when I lived in Ottawa, but completely useless in Toronto. And although they have the best roaming rates you can't just go roaming willy-nilly. It's still $1/MB and $0.15/text.
Overall I'm WAY happier with Koodo. LTE, excellent coverage, and it actually works in congested areas. It's definitely worth an extra $15/month for me.
Never had any problems in toronto except in elevators. Even 100km north where i am now I get full signal.
When were you with them? They have substantially upgraded their coverage.
For me though, I dont think I'd ever go back to anything owned by bell/telus/rogers out of principal. (koodo is telus owned.)
I also like how with wind I dont need to have a credit card or anything with them.
And with wind they have zero info on me. Not even my name. Although I think they changed this policy, as last time I went in to wind they tried getting me to provide an ID to link to my phone number. Screw that.

I switched about 4 months ago. I try to avoid the big 3 as well out of principal but I found it unavoidable in this case. For internet I use 3rd party providers.
Rogers is by FAR the worst offender of the three, and Telus is definitely the best. I fucking HATE Rogers though, they will never see another dime from my pocket.
My girlfriend lives in Barrie and WIND coverage there was pretty shitty when I had it.

Ah, man. It looks like there is no WIND coverage where I am. Koodo probably won't do either, as there's no way I could live with only 2 gigs. I get 6 with Telus now, and I always go over. It sucks too, because where I am, the only other internet I can get is dialup from Bell. I tether my phone to my laptop for internet service at home.
I don't understand why they charge so damned much for data plans here, it drives me crazy. When I am in Thailand, 4g service is about $24 per month with unlimited data and it works great.
edit: Thai 4g is actually only $13 per month

Yeah, I can dig it. The thing that pisses me off the most is how, if you go ove the data limit, they charge you at a rate that is far more expensive than what you normally pay when you're within the limit. I mean, most businesses, if you buy more, you pay less. But oh, no. Not these bastards. Always looking for a way to scalp you for a little more.

This, I fucking hated going to concerts with my ex girlfriend because she'd always be watching the fuckign concert through her god damn phone. Seriously!?!? Do you know how many videos of this performance are going to be on youtube? How many times are you gonna watch this shit on your phone later anyway. Enjoy the damn show. Definitely one of my top 3 pet peeves.

Oh, and what about texto-ing?
Its has txting too, but I just use google voice which puts my texts over the data stream.
I just googled it and found this article (I have not read the article). I have used this for about two years now. Its great. http://www.gadgetreview.com/2013/06/t-mobile-has-a-secret-plan-that-costs-30month.html

The value proposition of a smart phone is absolutely variable and dependent on the person. It's like asking whether it's worth it to get just a burger or the whole meal with fries and a drink.

Smart phones have gotten me out from behind my fucking PC and socializing again. Yeah, I'd say it's worth it. PC is now just a hooge jukebox/media hub/word processor. Wish this place had a decent mobile app...but its prolly for the best that it doesn't.

This website is absurdly phone friendly when you turn off ads on your phone and signatures on The forum. Try one of the darker themes to reduce battery consumption.

Does viewing darker images onscreen actually reduce power consumption though?

No, because the backlight (what consumes most of the power) is still at the same level

Yeah that was my thinking. If each subpixel was an individual LED then it would make sense, but as far as I knew the "LED" displays in phones just use LEDs for the backlight. I guess it might be possible to program them to lower the backlight on the fly for darker images though, at the expense of worse contrast.

Yeah... I used to be really into projectors and some of them dim in during darker scenes but to my knowledge, this either doesn't exist in phones or hasn't been widely implemented.
Many, including the iPhones, can set the brightness according to light levels every time you unlock it or fire it up which is nice.
I think a very select few TVs actually use clusters of micro LEDs for pixels, but for the most part I'm pretty sure you're right that it's just LED backlights. God, imagine the contrast you could achieve with each pixel being its own independent light source...

AMOLED displays provide higher refresh rates than their passive-matrix OLED counterparts,[not specific enough to verify] improving response time often to under a millisecond, and they consume significantly less power.[9] This advantage makes active-matrix OLEDs well suited for portable electronics, where power consumption is critical to battery life.
The amount of power the display consumes varies significantly depending on the colour and brightness shown. As an example, one commercial QVGA OLED display consumes 0.3 watts while showing white text on a black background, but more than 0.7 watts showing black text on a white background, while an LCD may consume only a constant 0.35 watts regardless of what is being shown on screen.[10] Because the black pixels actually turn off, AMOLED also has contrast ratios that are significantly better than LCD.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMOLED#Comparison_to_other_technologies
Darker screen = better battery life I use inverted gapps on my Galaxy S3 and battery life improved a lot because of it. Not to mention it's a lot easier on the eyes.
