I have a samsung transform that I got for $75. It has a real pullout keyboard that I like and cost $45 a month, unlimited everything. I just use it as a phone(duh), camera, and to get on shroomery. Id say worth it. And I know someone will say "bs" on the unlimikted everything part, so yes, it is supposed to 'throttle down' my data if I use too much, but I've never noticed it or gotten that far..

I use my phone for its camera, music playing, keeping in contact, as well as I tether it to my computer to use my mobile data. My plan at only $40/month has unlimited data, so I've been able to ditch my internet hardline and save over $80/month.
As for them being fragile, some can be, I avoid glass screens for this reason, they like to crack and the cracks propagate. The phones with plastic screens I find to be more durable, and when they crack, it tends to be a single crack that doesnt spread.
Woah, what company gave you unlimited data for only $40 per month in Canada? I only get 6 gigs with Telus, and with all of the stupid fees and whatnot it usually ends up soaking me for over $100 per month.

I have a $30/mo no-contract plan with straight talk. 1kminutes+1ktexts+30mb data (enough for hours of facebook).
$99 phone.
Unfortunately it doesn't have an android OS or whatever so the "apps" it runs are only the basic ones and there is no app store or anything. The camera sucks too.
Still though, I spent $10 on a microsd card and added 10 hours of music (free mixtape downloads online).
Altogether I'm glad I'm not stuck in some bullshit $55+/mo contract plan.

Yeah, I bought my phone outright. They tried so hard to get me to take their stupid 3yr contract, but I wasn't having any of it. I also made them give me the unlock code right there in the store when I bought it, too.

Damn that's too bad. For an extra $70 you could have gotten a Nexus 5 which is pretty much top of the line.

That you constantly have access to and is therefore constantly a distraction. I see people staring at their smart phones with blank expressions while I enjoy the beauty of nature around me (be it a natural forest or a freshly cut lawn) and I am so glad I don't have one

And that has little to do with the device and more the individual who uses it.
You guys are putting the blame on technology when it's society and culture that are making people more socially awkward. It's like saying that the gun is what takes another persons life.

No I agree with you completely. Our culture is at fault. I think that's why it's important to not keep a computer with you at all times. Be the change.

So which phone provider has a 40 dollar unlimited deal? I am about to get into market and most of my friends seem to pay about 100 a month. I don't mind buying the phone either. It will be nice to finally have GPS, I get lost a lot.

Mine is waterproof and shock resistant. Dropped it on concrete a few times and wouldn't even power down. Screen is tough as nails too. Not the best or fastest but its like 3 years old. Just needed a new battery this year. If the gaskets are clean its water tight. When there is nothing on the radio I use it for tunes. When I'm working I'm listening to internet streams on it. I have used it to access emails, maps, and files while on the go. There are some truly useful apps out there too. I could survive without it. But I sure do like it. More useful though when working or traveling. Pointless if at home or on a computer all the time.

WIND does, but their service blows. I'm on Koodo and I get 2GB of data and unlimited Canada-wide text/calling for $54/mo. It's quite reasonable. Koodo is owned by Telus BTW, so it's the full Telus network.

I'm with WIND mobile.
I have a promo plan that never expires, called the Oh Canada plan. $29/month for unlimited canada wide voice/text. With a $10/month Data upgrade.
Their "unlimited" data is a bit odd though. I have 10 gigs a month at full speed, and after the 10gigs, they cut me back to half speed, which is still good enough for youtube streaming and everything i normally do.
Cant watch HD youtube though once they cut me back to half speed. But I can sacrifice HD youtube to save myself $80/month with rogers.
When I was with rogers, my cell bill was over $100/month. so my current cell is $40/month. and then with not needed rogers internet, im saving $160/month since I switched.
WIND is only unlimited in their "home" zones though, they charge a bit when youre roaming. But I live in southern ontario, and have been able to go from hamilton, to toronto, and up to barrie without having extra charges.
Join wind, the more people switch to them, the faster they can expand their networks.

WIND is essentially non-functional in downtown Toronto. Worked fine when I lived in Ottawa, but completely useless in Toronto. And although they have the best roaming rates you can't just go roaming willy-nilly. It's still $1/MB and $0.15/text.
Overall I'm WAY happier with Koodo. LTE, excellent coverage, and it actually works in congested areas. It's definitely worth an extra $15/month for me.
