Correct EZ-Felt & WBS?
    #19164135 - 11/20/13 09:29 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I wanted to know from people that have had success with EZ-Felt if this brand will work. It is not stiff as you can see. I don't want to waste time if I need another brand. But I hope not since I have already made up all the jars.  :goat:

Also I have been having a hard time finding WBS with just milo and millet. Will this brand be suitable to colonize? I can remove the popcorn since I have read that it may cause moisture issues if not done proper. My plan is to wash the seed, then soak for 12-24 hours, let drain for 30-60 min until it stops dripping (doesn't stick to my hands????) fill wide mouth quart jars half full and PC for 90 min at 15 psi. Let cool over night in PC then Inoculate with spores through the RTV SHIP.

Sound about right?

the wbs I use has cracked corn in it and I have never had issues with it. Furthermore I prep it in nearly the same fashion as you plan to. But as the saying goes...  'different strokes for different folks." You just have to find what works best for you. If you feel more comfortable removing all the corn and sunflower seeds, then by all means, have at it. Best of luck!

You forgot to simmer!

That felt should do the trick, I was at Jo-Anns
and noticed the same stuff, but further down the aisle was
a stiffer version.

Tractor Supply has good deals on WBS if you've got
one around. Its like 15$ for 50$ and it does contain
corn, albeit not that much! The sunflower seeds though,
a handfull every batch is annoying, but I skim them out
as they float.

Yea what's in the WBS doesn't seem like it will cause any issues.
Do you have any tips for getting the correct moisture content. Such as how it looks, feels, etc.
I don't plan on simmering it either.

What will simmering help with? Better germination for a more contamination free PC?
I have heard both simmer and not to simmer. What's to gain?

It will help dry the outside of the grains better aswell as
aiding in hydration of the internal grain.

Once its simmering, almost boiling, strain it out and allow to dry in open air via; painters cloth, on the table over newspaper.. ect
use your imagination.

I use a big tote and drape window screen across it, latch it with
zipties and I can strain enough wbs for 40 jars in one session.

I use the same technique to clean the wbs before I allow
it to soak.

When you simmer it forces more water into the grains and helps them dry since they will be so hot. It's up to you, I have always simmered and I've never had a problem.

I see, i see.
So I'll go with simmering the WBS, better safe then sorry it seems with this hobby.
So soak for 12-24 hours after rinsing then simmer for 30 min?
Then how long to dry/drain. Until no dripping occurs?

This is my first time having a go at this btw.
I'm waiting for my spores to arrive witch should be today or tomorrow. And then I have some columbian spores coming Friday or next week.
Should I not start prepping the WBS until I have syringe in hand?

Also I'm going to go ahead and add a later of EZ-felt to be safe.

You can begin prepping a day in advance, as its going to take a day to soak, 16-18-20-24 hours, your preference, you'll develop your own over time, than another hour to simmer depending on the amount of grain, and than 2-2 1/2 hours to PC, another 2-4-6 Hours to Cool Down..

Stuff takes time

Yea I'm preparing myself for a long wait.
What I'm most concerned about it the correct moisture content for the WBS, because from what I read that it was makes or breaks fast colonizing.

My goal is to have some fruits to eat at New Years. This is probably unrealistic being my first time, but I have never done this so idk.

I'm also probably going to do a grow log.

i only simmer for about ten minutes, you just want your wbs grains to be hot so they steam dry the outside:thumbup:

I wouldent say this is COMPLETELY out of the realm of possibility,

depending on your technique and what growth mediums you choose
41 days seems about right to get a few fruits using pf-tek or making
mini-monos from wbs/grains.

Ehh, may be stretching that.. Its been a while, maybe
others can chime in

We'll I'm going to try my best! I have seen threads of 20 days from start to finish, but I know that defiantly won't happen.
Yea, I'm doing mini mono with PE and WBS and another mini mono and a bigger mono with columbians in them. Trying to up my chances with more tubs. Using coco coir mix substrate.

Do bigger tubs generally take longer then smaller ones?

no, diffrent ratios will effect the times but tub size not so much

As In substrate to spawn?
Such as 1:3 being faster to colonize then 1:4.
I'll keep that in mind, but with that in mind, can you use to much spawn and hurt the nutrition content of your tub?

you won't ruin it,may take longer to consolidate/pin but you may also get the extra flush out of it:thumbup:

So if I remember from reading other posts 1:4 is a good starting point?
This has been quite helpful ironing out the fine points
Ill be coming back if and when I have small substrate questions.
