Hey my first season hunting only found one patch of cyans up in Bc here. The patch has been quite fruitful but seems to be slowing down. Just wondering what low temps usually signify the end of the season?

The cold snap going on right now on the western Or/WA border is likely to continue through @ least part of the weekend. Get out there today if you can and pick what you see, 'cause it'll likely be ruined by Saturday!!!
(Sorry if this is too weather related, but sub-30 temps for the next 4 evenings might not have been on everyone's radar. I've been checking forecasts for a while that said it wasn't supposed to get this low for another day, at least, and I didn't want ppl to get out there over the next couple days and wonder why their patches seemed nuked!)

Hey guys I have some LC questions for anyone who might be able to help. How long should I wait to spray the solution? Should I spray on woodchips or grass with chips underneath?
I have had it going in a spray bottle for a couple weeks now and im starting to see strands form. Made the mix of 1 to 10 karo and water and put about 15 prints in there. Been swirling it every day now its exciting to watch. If this works out im gonna make so much lc to cover the city I live in

I poked around online a bit and didn't really find anything... I grew up in the middle east and as I got older and realized what we ate as kids; I read up and thought all the studies on desert truffles were/are pretty cool.
So, anyway... Does anyone know if any studies have been kicked off on 'magic truffles' in the PNW? I tried 'em in Amsterdam and they were awesome (but disgusting). That got me thinking - With all the fungal growth in PNW, might we have 'magic' truffles out there?

Sclerotia are formed by Psilocybe section Mexicanae, and those species do not occur in the PNW.

I am not sure about spreading grains, the rodents and other animals eat them up. But maybe that is not always a bad thing.
But I think it is usually better to use grains to inoculate wood chips indoors, and then put them outside once colonized.

Ahhhhh... After you wrote that, I had little more to go on and did some more reading. Just a couple pages of reading got me an answer on where the truffles I had in Amsterdam came from (thought they were found in Europe naturally. Didn't realize they were cultivated from Psilocybe tampanensis, Psilocybe mexicana and Psilocybe Atlantis). So, that part makes good sense and all. Now, given that at least those three species of mushroom's mycelium produce sclerotia... I'm still hanging a little on part of my question... With all diversity in fungal (specifically psilocibes) growth in the PNW; I can't imagine that it's not possible that at least one or a few of those my have mycelium that produce sclerotia. And, IF that's the case, I wonder if anyone has started looking for it...

I believe strongly that you are referring to two completely different species of fungus. The "truffle" P. mexicana produces is a psychoactive fungus. The truffle which grows naturally in Europs (and some species in PNW as well) is a delicious edible, surviving on the roots of specific tree species. If you bought psychoactive "truffles" in Amsterdam, they are P. mexicana. If you bought an edible truffle, in Amsterdam, it was a Tuber species.

Yea - I get that, jet. And, yea, I am referring to two different things. But, both stem from the same origin and make me wonder if we have any type of active truffle in the PNW.
I just finished up reading this, and I'm pretty sure I have my answer (at least a theory). After looking at the list in the reading and it's vast amount of truffles we have in the PNW; I wouldn't be too surprised if someone came across an active one eventually. Maybe I'll end up being that guy. The little read is pretty good and detailed: http://www.fs.fed.us/pnw/pubs/pnw_gtr772.pdf

Thanks. I scored that out in the middle of nowere at a junk for sale barn. Its pretty basic. Metal box. Shelfs for screens and round hole in back for small fan. The bottom collects the spores for end of the season project.

heya community! after 5 hours of footwork and walking around in the rain, i have 2 things for id that caught my eye. sorry for not having habitat shots, didn't think to bring my camera along. prints in the works
first are these awesome fruits i found growing in huge clusters in wood chips. they caught my eye cause they appeared to have this green/yellow tint/glow to them. very strong fruit body to them.

next are these little suckers. growing in woodchips, there were numerous pins popping up. i may be tired from walking around all day but do i spy with my little eye some blueish/greenish bruising at the base of the big stem?

happy hunting!

Your first looks like a Hypholoma sp.
You second find is a Gymnopilus sp. I think luteofolius.
I'm not a TI so I could be wrong.
