Deadly Galerina
    #19162970 - 11/19/13 11:58 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hi All, SWIM did not get photos as SWIM was so startled that SWIM disposed of the specimens immediately to prevent spore spreading.

But anyway, SWIM encountered the deadly galerina mushroom today.  The little devils really go out of their way to mimic the outward appearance of wood-loving psilocybes, so it really is a matter of life and death to pay attention to any outdoor picks, wild or domesticated.  Verify every single specimen, no matter how much work it may seem like.

Color is everything.  The Galerina has an orange sherbet quality throughout the whole muchroom, head, gills, and stem,

Wood loving psilocybes have more of a light tan quality to the flesh.  Young heads are medium brown, young gills are light tan.  Young Wood loving psilocybe stems are tan to brown on the inside, with white skin,

As they age, psilocybe heads can bleach from the sun, turning a faded yellow beige color.  Gills turn purplish or chocolate brown from spores. White stems can turn blue from bruising or purple/black from spores.

Galerina will not bruise blue.  Wood loving psilocybes usually bruise blue, but not always, and sometimes have to wait a while after bruising before blue shows up.

You are aware that Galerina mushrooms aren't illegal, right?

I'm a bit put off by the way this is posted. Maybe it's just me. I think OP just didn't want more Deadly Gals to inhabit the area, but regardless of his efforts millions were spread already.

Yea OP won't really be able to do much about the spreading of that species.

I'm not sure if this belongs here. Maybe someone should close it? Doesn't seem to be anything pertinent (or accurate) you can't already find on the site.

Probably a Tubaria species, edible.

But I would want to see pics to be sure.
